Job Overview: The Software Engineering Fellow position at CERN involves working on Indico, a web-based event management system that facilitates conferences and meetings for thousands of users globally. The role focuses on modernizing Indico's public conference timetable using React, enhancing mobile usability, and improving the overall user interface. As a member of the development team, you will actively contribute to a significant Open Source project, collaborating with other developers in an agile environment, maintaining code repositories, and participating in code reviews. Additionally, you may engage with users as part of the Indico support rota, ensuring that the platform meets the needs of its diverse user base.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Actively contribute to the Indico Open Source project on GitHub, collaborating with an international team of developers.
Work closely with other developers to prototype solutions and iterate on them in an agile environment.
Maintain code repositories, ensuring high-quality code through regular code reviews.
Possibly engage in DevOps infrastructure work, utilizing tools such as OpenStack and Puppet.
Participate in user engagement activities as part of the Indico support rota, addressing user inquiries and feedback.
Implement improvements to the Indico platform, focusing on user experience and interface enhancements.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful delivery of software releases.
Skills in Flask, SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL, and GitHub are considered advantageous.
Eligibility criteria include being a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and having a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Software Engineering or a related field.
Applicants must hold either a Bachelor's or Master's degree; those without a university degree or with a PhD are not eligible.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those holding a PhD will also be disqualified.
Experience: The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should be relevant to software engineering or a closely related field, ensuring that candidates have a foundational understanding of the necessary technologies and practices.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Knowledge of French is considered a plus, as it may facilitate interaction within the organization and with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The target start date for the position is April 1, 202
The role offers a monthly stipend ranging from 5196 to 5716 Swiss Francs (net of tax), along with comprehensive health coverage for the employee and their family, membership in the CERN Pension Fund, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and will have access to on-the-job training, formal training opportunities, and in-house language courses.
