Job Overview:
The Science and Technology Writer position at CERN is an exciting opportunity for recent graduates who are passionate about science communication and journalism. The role is situated within the Community Engagement section of the Education, Communications and Outreach group in the International Relations sector. The Internal Communications team at CERN plays a crucial role in disseminating information about the laboratory's activities and achievements to a wide audience, including nearly 20,000 physicists, engineers, technicians, and administrators. The successful candidate will be responsible for crafting engaging written content that highlights the innovative work being done at CERN, thereby contributing to the laboratory's mission of sharing knowledge and fostering public interest in science. This position is ideal for individuals looking to build their portfolio in science communication and gain valuable experience in a prestigious research environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The core duties and responsibilities of the Science and Technology Writer include managing editorial requests, pitching news stories, writing and editing articles, and preparing the CERN Bulletin newsletter for internal distribution. The writer will coordinate audiovisual content for internal screens and liaise with various contributors across CERN, including the translation service, writing, social media, media, and web teams. The role requires excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams to produce compelling articles that resonate with both internal and external audiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess excellent English writing and editing skills, with a proficiency level of C
  • Previous experience in creating journalistic content is essential, along with strong organizational and interpersonal skills. While experience in web publishing is considered an asset, fluency in English is mandatory, and the ability to work in French is advantageous. Applicants must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Communication, Social Sciences, STEM, or a related field. It is important to note that applicants without a university degree or those with a PhD are not eligible for this position.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes either a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Communication, Social Sciences, STEM, or a related field. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years to be eligible for the role, ensuring that the selected individual is a recent graduate with fresh perspectives and ideas.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should ideally be in fields related to communication, social sciences, or STEM, allowing the candidate to bring relevant skills and knowledge to the role. The position offers a monthly stipend ranging from 5,196 to 5,716 Swiss Francs (net of tax), along with comprehensive health coverage for the employee and their family, membership in the CERN Pension Fund, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and will receive on-the-job training, formal training at CERN, and access to in-house language courses for English and/or French.
