Job Overview:
The Assistant Software Technician position within the Beam Instrumentation Group (SY-BI) at CERN involves collaboration with engineers and technical personnel to support various software-related processes. The role primarily focuses on using WRAP, an internally developed drag-and-drop tool, to assist in implementing visual displays that aid daily operations and instrument development. Additionally, the technician will gather user feedback and communicate with the WRAP product team to suggest improvements. The position also requires the creation of dashboards using Grafana to monitor system health, as well as the creation and updating of online documentation for the group's instruments. The technician will be responsible for updating software design descriptions, ensuring that existing software designs are accurately documented and complete.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with engineers and technical personnel to implement visual displays using WRAP to support daily operations and instrument development.
  • Gather user feedback on WRAP and communicate suggestions for improvements to the product team.
  • Assist in creating dashboards with Grafana to monitor the health of systems.
  • Create and update documentation on the group's instruments using established online pages.
  • Update and complete missing textual descriptions in existing software designs.
  • Ensure effective communication with team members and stakeholders regarding software-related tasks and updates.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in software engineering and related fields.

Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of basic computing concepts and the use of computing tools in a desktop environment.
  • Good communication skills, particularly in English.
  • Ability to work in a team and collaborate effectively with engineers and technical personnel.
  • Eligibility criteria include being a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and having a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Software Engineering or a related field.
  • Candidates must have a general secondary education diploma and have never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a general secondary education diploma. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years and possess a maximum of two years of professional experience in Software Engineering or a related field. Higher educational qualifications such as a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree disqualify applicants from this position.

Experience:
Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Software Engineering or a related field. This experience should be relevant to the duties and responsibilities outlined in the job description, particularly in software development and documentation.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. The ability to work in French is considered an advantage, enhancing communication within the diverse team at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possible extension of up to 36 months maximum. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, with a target start date of 01-May-202
  • The position offers a monthly stipend of 4624 Swiss Francs (net of tax) and coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme for the employee, spouse, and children. Additional benefits may include an installation grant, family allowances, and payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of the contract. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and will have access to on-the-job and formal training, as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
