Job Overview: The Computing Engineer position at CERN is focused on supporting and evolving the cloud-native infrastructure within the IT Compute and Devices (CD) group. The role involves managing and extending Kubernetes and Container Registry services that are essential for both business and scientific computing at CERN. The successful candidate will collaborate with user communities to define service priorities and roadmaps, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively. Additionally, the role requires integration with various components of CERN's computing infrastructure, including identity management, storage, networking, and compute resources. The engineer will also be responsible for delivering new features and providing user support to CERN's diverse user communities, particularly those involved with the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).
Duties and Responsibilities: The Computing Engineer will supervise junior team members and foster collaboration across different IT groups and departments. Key responsibilities include contributing to the development of the service roadmap, coordinating releases and service upgrades, and ensuring effective collaboration with vendors and industry partners. The engineer will also be tasked with optimizing systems and platforms in a rapidly evolving environment, ensuring that the services meet the needs of the user community and adapt to new use cases as they arise.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a degree in Computing Engineering or a related field, with a master's degree or equivalent relevant experience preferred. Demonstrated experience in developing and supporting Kubernetes platforms and services is essential, along with extensive knowledge of container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes, Prometheus, Harbor, and Argo. Familiarity with DevOps practices is also required, and additional experience in operating large-scale infrastructures and working with cloud computing platforms (both private and public) is considered an asset. Previous collaboration with projects in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is also advantageous.
Educational Background: A degree in Computing Engineering or a related field is required, with a master's degree or equivalent experience being highly desirable. This educational background ensures that candidates have a solid foundation in the principles of computing and engineering necessary for the role.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in developing and supporting Kubernetes platforms, with a proven track record of managing services for end users with diverse use cases. Experience in optimizing large-scale infrastructures and familiarity with both private and public cloud computing platforms will be beneficial. Candidates should also have a history of collaborating with various projects and communities within the cloud-native ecosystem.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as the role requires effective communication in professional contexts. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not specified as mandatory.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position under certain conditions.
