Job Overview:
The Political Affairs Officer position is critical within the United Nations, primarily found in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), Department of Peace Operations (DPO), and the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA). Duties and Responsibilities:
The Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including: reviewing and monitoring political activities in assigned regions; assessing trends affecting internal political situations; analyzing political events to provide early warning advice to senior leadership; preparing analytical reports and papers for the General Assembly and Security Council; participating in the organization of secretariat services for UN bodies; acting as a focal point for political issue analysis; supporting conflict prevention dialogues and negotiations; organizing inter-agency mechanisms; maintaining contacts with other UN sectors and international organizations; carrying out administrative functions related to team management and planning; drafting operational plans; collecting and analyzing data for insights; and performing other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, or conflict resolution. They should demonstrate a strong understanding of political dynamics and possess the ability to analyze complex situations effectively. Professionalism, communication skills, teamwork, and sound judgment are essential competencies for this role.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or related fields is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields, combined with two additional years of relevant work experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields such as political science, international relations, law, or conflict resolution. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in complex political environments and engaging with diverse stakeholders.

Languages:
Fluency in English or French is required, as these are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory for this position.
