Job Overview: The HVAC Project Engineer position at CERN offers a unique opportunity for a graduate HVAC engineer to gain experience in a multicultural environment. The role involves working within the dynamic HVAC section of the Site Asset Management group, where the engineer will be guided by an HVAC expert. The primary responsibilities include conducting technical studies and designing optimized HVAC solutions that meet site constraints, preparing design plans and technical specifications, and managing project timelines and budgets. The engineer will also supervise and coordinate on-site teams to ensure projects are completed on schedule and adhere to CERN's quality standards. Collaboration with subcontractors and suppliers is essential, as the engineer will act as the primary point of contact between various stakeholders. Additionally, the role includes conducting functional tests for commissioning and providing training to users, managing project handovers, and implementing maintenance documentation.
Duties and Responsibilities: The HVAC Project Engineer will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including: conducting technical studies to assess site constraints and design HVAC solutions; preparing detailed design plans and technical specifications; planning budgets and timelines for projects; supervising and coordinating on-site teams to ensure adherence to schedules and quality standards; collaborating with subcontractors and suppliers, serving as the main point of contact; conducting functional tests during commissioning phases; providing training to users on HVAC systems; managing project handovers and addressing any issues that arise; ensuring final acceptance of projects; and implementing and maintaining documentation related to HVAC systems and maintenance.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria, including being a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. A professional background in Mechanical, HVAC, Energy, or a related field is required. Candidates should possess either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC, Energy, or a related field. The degree should be complemented by relevant professional experience, as outlined in the required qualifications section.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a professional background with varying levels of experience based on their educational qualifications. Specifically, candidates with a Master's degree should have between 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, while those with a PhD should have no more than 3 years of relevant experience. This experience should ideally be in HVAC system design, installation, and maintenance.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary working language at CERN. While not required, the ability to work in French would be considered an advantage, enhancing communication within the multicultural environment of CERN.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The target start date for the role is May 1, 202
The position involves interventions in underground installations, and candidates must possess a valid driving license. Compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6287 to 6911 Swiss Francs (net of tax), coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme for the employee and their family, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year, and CERN offers on-the-job and formal training, as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.
