The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage with no premiums, generous paid time off, paid family leave, retirement contributions, regional holidays, and opportunities for employees to engage in various community initiatives. The Foundation is committed to fostering a workplace environment that supports both personal and professional growth for its employees.
Job Overview: The Deputy Director (DD) plays a crucial role in leading the execution of strategies and managing partnerships related to upstream initiatives, particularly focusing on the LSFF (Large Scale Food Fortification) Research and Development (R&D). This position involves identifying and building a portfolio of innovative R&D investments aimed at micronutrient innovation and food-fortification vehicle innovation. The DD is expected to ensure that R&D innovations are actionable and aligned with the strategic delivery portfolio of the Foundation. The role requires a strong emphasis on collaboration with various teams within the Foundation to enhance programmatic alignment and nutritional improvements, ultimately contributing to greater impact in developing countries. The Deputy Director will also represent the Foundation's innovation work in Nutrition and LSFF to both internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners and global development organizations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Deputy Director will lead the development and market introduction of cost-effective nutrients and new fortifiable foods tailored to specific countries, ensuring nutritional reach to malnourished populations. Responsibilities include building and managing relationships with the scientific community, staying updated on nutritional science, developing learning formats for evidence generation, and aligning with multiple foundation teams to ensure a coordinated approach to nutrition. The DD will facilitate the creation of annual investment plans and budgets, provide strategic direction to the team, assess portfolio risks, and represent the Foundation's innovation work in various forums. Additionally, the role involves mentoring team members, selecting partners, and leading partnerships to achieve impactful outcomes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess deep experience in emerging nutrition science and related R&D, with a solid understanding of the R&D stage gate process from conceptualization to commercialization. The ability to build strategic partnerships with private sector organizations and effectively communicate complex ideas to non-technical partners is essential. Field experience in countries with high malnutrition rates is highly desirable, along with a strong understanding of gender gaps in the LSFF value chain. Candidates should demonstrate self-awareness, transparency, and a commitment to the Foundation's goals and values.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree is required, along with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. A PhD or other advanced degree is preferred, particularly in fields such as biochemistry, nutrition, or food technology sciences. Candidates should have experience in LSFF or related developmental fields, including managing strategies, grants, and programs aimed at reducing vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Experience: The position requires significant experience in nutrition science and R&D, ideally with a combination of roles as a researcher, portfolio manager, or investor. Candidates should have experience working in matrixed environments and with global teams, as well as a willingness to travel up to 30% of the time for both domestic and international engagements.
Languages: While specific language requirements are not mentioned, proficiency in English is mandatory. Additional language skills may be beneficial, particularly in languages relevant to the Foundation's focus geographies.
Additional Notes: The position is based in Seattle, Washington, and offers a competitive salary range of $233,600 to $362,200 USD, with adjustments for high-wage market differences in Seattle and Washington D.C. New hires typically start between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range, depending on their skills and experience. The Foundation is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in its hiring practices and offers accommodations for candidates with disabilities during the application process. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
