Job Overview:
The Information Systems Assistant position is situated within the Infrastructure & Conference Support Section (ICS) of the Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS) in the Division of Administrative Services (DAS) at UNON. The incumbent will work under the guidance of the Chief of ICS and the direct supervision of the Information Security Officer. The role primarily focuses on providing information security support, network administration, and technology research. The assistant will be responsible for processing information security user requests, providing technical support, maintaining data security projects, and conducting research on new technologies. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying vulnerabilities and threats to the network, ensuring the protection of critical cyber defense infrastructure, and collaborating with technical staff and users to enhance information security measures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Information Security Support: Act as the focal point for information security user requests and incidents, provide technical support for hardware and software systems, install application systems software and hardware, assist in integrating information security into application software systems, perform regular vulnerability assessments, and analyze network traffic for potential threats.
  • Network Administration: Support data security projects with a focus on network security, participate in security incident response activities, and maintain regular contact with users to provide necessary support.
  • Technology Research: Conduct research on new technologies, participate in testing and evaluating new tools, and keep abreast of developments in information systems and technology.
  • Perform other related duties as required, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to changing requirements.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of information technology, particularly in information security and computer system networks. They should demonstrate the ability to respond to changing requirements, apply good judgment, and show persistence in problem-solving. Professionalism, teamwork, and technological awareness are essential competencies for this role. Additionally, candidates should have certifications in Information Security, such as those from ISC2, GIAC, ISACA, or Offensive Security, with a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification being mandatory.

Educational Background:
Completion of secondary education is required for this position. Candidates with certifications in Information Security and a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification are highly desirable. Certification in Windows/Linux Forensics is also preferred, and candidates should confirm their certifications by attaching copies with their applications.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in information security, incident response, and threat management is required. Candidates with a first-level university degree may have the minimum experience requirement reduced by two years. Experience as a Security Operations Center (SOC) analyst, knowledge of Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) products, and experience in Cyberthreat Intelligence, Incident Response, and Threat Hunting are desirable. Familiarity with general-purpose scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell, as well as experience in data analytics, is also advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and understanding, while knowledge is rated as 'confident' in two of the four areas.

The appointment for this position is for an initial period of one year, with any extensions subject to the availability of funds and budgetary approval. This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that candidates must be residents of Kenya or within commuting distance.
