Job Overview: The Project Manager position at UNDP is crucial for overseeing Phase 3 of the Environmental Governance Programme (EGP) on Mining, which aims to address social and environmental challenges in mining governance. The role involves ensuring effective project management, coordination among various stakeholders, and knowledge sharing across multiple countries. The Project Manager will be responsible for developing project plans, monitoring implementation, and ensuring that the project aligns with UNDP's strategic objectives. This position requires a deep understanding of sustainable development, environmental governance, and the ability to navigate complex policy environments. The Project Manager will also engage with various partners, including government agencies, civil society, and private sector stakeholders, to promote integrated approaches to environmental governance and sustainable resource management.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project Manager will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:
Project Management: Develop and oversee project planning processes, ensuring that work plans and budgets are prepared based on thorough capacity assessments.
Coordination: Direct and coordinate the work of a multidisciplinary team of over 20 individuals, ensuring effective collaboration and communication among team members.
Knowledge Sharing: Facilitate knowledge sharing and capacity building among Country Offices and regional teams, ensuring that best practices and lessons learned are disseminated effectively.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Develop and implement a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework to assess project progress and impact.
Field Visits: Conduct field visits to project sites to monitor progress and engage with local stakeholders.
Reporting: Prepare and submit regular reports on project status, achievements, and challenges to senior management and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of relevant work experience in project management, particularly in the context of sustainable development. A strong background in results-based management and experience in coordinating complex projects are essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience working with international organizations or UN agencies, particularly in the areas of environmental governance and sustainable resource management. Familiarity with donor institutions and experience in project planning and budgeting are also required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment, are essential for success in this role.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Public Administration, Policy, Economics, Development Studies, or a closely related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the aforementioned fields, combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience, will be considered in lieu of the advanced degree. Candidates with relevant certifications in project management or sustainable development will have an advantage.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of five years of professional experience in the delivery, coordination, and management of programs and projects related to sustainable development. This experience should include a strong focus on results-oriented project implementation and management, as well as practical experience in developing and monitoring work plans and budgets. Experience in engaging with donors and stakeholders in the field of environment and sustainable development is highly desirable. Candidates with prior experience in environmental governance and collaboration with organizations such as the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Swepa) will be preferred.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly those relevant to the countries involved in the project, will be considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders and partners.
Additional Notes: This position is home-based, and the incumbent will report directly to the Senior Policy Advisor on Environmental Governance. The role requires the incumbent to provide their own workstation and ensure access to reliable internet connectivity. Given the global nature of the project, flexibility in availability for consultations across different time zones is expected. The position is full-time and may involve travel to project sites as needed. UNDP emphasizes a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual exploitation and misconduct, and all selected candidates will undergo rigorous reference and background checks.
