Job Overview:
The Editor position is crucial for enhancing the efficiency and transparency of electoral administration in Fiji. The role involves reviewing and revising the existing operations manuals and publications of the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) to ensure clarity, accessibility, and compliance. The Editor will create plain language and easy-read formats for these documents, aiming to reduce errors among staff and promote a streamlined electoral administration process. This position is part of the Voter Outreach for Transparent Elections (VOTE) Fiji project, which seeks to improve civic awareness and foster a gender-sensitive approach to elections. The Editor will also establish templates for future electoral events, ensuring they align with best practices and are user-friendly, while providing training to FEO staff on the importance of these formats.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Editor will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
  • Reviewing and revising the FEO's existing operations manuals to improve language clarity and usability.
  • Developing standardized templates for future electoral events that incorporate plain language and easy-read formats.
  • Ensuring that revised manuals and templates are accessible to relevant FEO staff and promoting their effective utilization.
  • Providing training to FEO staff on the implementation of plain language and easy-read formats.
  • Implementing quality assurance measures to verify the clarity and effectiveness of revised documents.
  • Offering general editing support for corporate and public documents as required, ensuring they align with FEO and UNDP standards.
  • Performing other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Languages, Journalism, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the mentioned areas, combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience, will be considered. A minimum of 5 years of working experience in editing is required for those with a master’s degree, while 7 years is necessary for those with a bachelor’s degree. Proven experience in plain language and easy-read editing for technical documents is essential, along with a strong understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive communication practices. Excellent written communication skills in English, attention to detail, and experience working with government institutions are also required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Languages, Journalism, or a related field. Candidates with a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in these areas, along with additional qualifying experience, will also be considered.
