Job Overview:
The internship is situated within the Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications, specifically in the Sustainable Development and Climate Section. This section is dedicated to promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a set of 17 global goals established by the United Nations to address various social, economic, and environmental challenges. The internship is designed for a duration of three months, with the possibility of extension up to six months, contingent upon the needs of the Division and the intern's availability. Interns are expected to work full-time, five days a week, totaling 35 hours, under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Section. The role is unpaid, and interns will gain valuable experience in communications and media within a global context, contributing to the UN's mission of fostering sustainable development and climate action.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that may include, but are not limited to:
  • Tracking, researching, and analyzing information on assigned topics, gathering data from diverse sources, and assessing news value and potential impacts;
  • Drafting and compiling various types of information products tailored for specific target audiences, including print, broadcast, and social media formats;
  • Conducting photo and graphic research, as well as designing and preparing multimedia assets using tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite, including captioning videos and clips;
  • Assisting in the implementation of DGC’s communications campaigns by identifying and proposing information opportunities and activities that align with the topic and target audiences;
  • Helping organize press conferences related to communications campaigns focused on priority development issues;
  • Maintaining and updating media and subscription mailing lists;
  • Monitoring media coverage relevant to the UN's initiatives and campaigns.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must fulfill one of the following criteria: (a) be currently enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be currently enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not a requirement for the UN Internship Programme, candidates should have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS PowerPoint, Trello, Canva, and MS Teams. Skills in Photoshop are considered desirable, as is the ability to draft news articles and social media posts.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application, and an official certificate will be required at a later stage.

Experience:
The internship does not require prior professional work experience, making it an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in a global organization. However, relevant academic background or coursework related to communications, media, or sustainable development is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
