Job Overview:
The Small-Scale Fisheries Coordinator will oversee the implementation of two key projects in Ghana aimed at enhancing sustainable small-scale fisheries and improving livelihoods. The incumbent will ensure that activities are executed according to the agreed workplans, which include implementing the Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines and developing the National Plan of Action for Small-Scale Fisheries (NPOA-SSF). The role requires close monitoring and reporting of progress to headquarters, contributing to communication materials, and engaging with various stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of project objectives. The position is crucial for advocating policies and investments in the areas of FAO’s mandate, particularly in the context of food security and poverty eradication.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Small-Scale Fisheries Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of the projects GCP/GLO/1301/SWE and FVC/GLO/225/MUL in Ghana. Key responsibilities include:
  • Serving as the focal point for interactions between implementing partners and key actors, including national and regional governmental organizations and small-scale fisheries organizations.
  • Developing and revising work plans in consultation with project Lead Technical Officers and national partners.
  • Ensuring timely implementation of project activities as per the agreed workplans.
  • Contributing to the development of communication materials as required.
  • Monitoring project implementation and reporting progress to HQ through established channels.
  • Supporting the establishment of a National Task Team for the NPOA-SSF and facilitating regular meetings.
  • Coordinating with FAO colleagues for effective implementation of activities.
  • Representing FAO in relevant meetings and events.
  • Performing any other tasks related to project implementation as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in fisheries biology, coastal development, or social development related to fisheries or an equivalent field. A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in small-scale fisheries is required. Additionally, candidates must have a working knowledge of English and be nationals of Ghana. FAO Core Competencies such as results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing are essential. Technical skills in project management and familiarity with fisheries-related policies and legal frameworks are also necessary.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in fisheries biology, coastal development, social development in the area of fisheries, or an equivalent qualification. It is important that the degree is obtained from an institution accredited or recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in small-scale fisheries. Candidates should have work experience in multiple locations or areas within Ghana or elsewhere, demonstrating a breadth of knowledge and adaptability in the field. Experience in fisheries-related policies and legal frameworks is also crucial, as is a good understanding of the institutions and actors relevant to the small-scale fisheries subsector in Ghana.

Languages:
A working knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not explicitly required.
