Job Overview:
The National Energy Expert will play a crucial role in the Decarbonising Humanitarian Energy (DHE) Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Project, which was founded in 202
  • This project aims to reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions associated with delivering humanitarian assistance by scaling up sustainable energy solutions for organizations serving displaced people and host communities. The expert will be responsible for extensive travel within Nigeria, including remote and conflict-affected areas, and will initially be contracted for 12 months with the possibility of extension. The role requires collaboration with the DHE Regional Energy Expert to support the planning and implementation of infrastructure decarbonisation efforts, conduct assessments of existing energy systems, and provide recommendations for improvements. The expert will also be involved in installing energy measuring devices, conducting energy efficiency audits, and developing project reports and cost analyses.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The National Energy Expert will have a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Collaborating with the DHE Regional Energy Expert to plan and implement infrastructure decarbonisation efforts within Nigeria.
  • Conducting assessments of existing energy systems and providing recommendations for improvements.
  • Installing energy measuring devices and training partners on their operation.
  • Conducting energy efficiency audits and preparing technical documents for upgrade works.
  • Identifying and evaluating solar energy resources and locations for installation.
  • Providing advice on end-user energy access and supporting the development of renewable energy solutions.
  • Undertaking field missions for project-specific tasks, surveys, and monitoring & evaluation activities.
  • Developing project reports, cost analysis, budgets, and detailed cost estimations for electrical systems upgrades.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree (BSc) in electrical engineering, sustainable development studies, energy technology, or relevant fields. They should have a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in energy infrastructure, either in the private sector or with humanitarian/development agencies. Familiarity with energy infrastructure topics, renewable energy systems design, implementation, and monitoring is essential. Knowledge of electrical installation standards, electrical design plans, and energy-related regulatory frameworks is also required. Proven experience in conducting energy audits and sizing renewable energy systems is necessary, along with a good understanding of energy standards and audits.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree (BSc) in electrical engineering, engineering, sustainable development studies, energy technology, or a related field. This foundational education is critical for understanding the technical aspects of energy systems and their implementation in humanitarian contexts.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience. This experience should ideally be in a private sector EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) firm, energy supply, consulting firm, or social enterprise focused on energy infrastructure. Experience working directly with UN or humanitarian/development agencies on renewable energy transitions is preferred. Candidates should also have experience in team management and knowledge of project management tools, which are considered a plus.

Languages:
Fluency in English is essential for this position, as it is the primary language of communication. Knowledge of local languages in Nigeria is considered an asset, as it can facilitate better communication and engagement with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is initially for 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and performance. The role involves extensive travel within Nigeria, including to remote and conflict-affected areas.
