Job Overview:
The NDC Update Coordinator will play a crucial role in supporting Mexico's efforts to update its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. This position involves managing consultations within the environmental sector and with relevant federal and subnational government agencies to ensure that the updated NDC reflects the highest level of ambition possible. The coordinator will also facilitate sectoral dialogue forums to identify priority measures for mitigation and adaptation, ensuring coordinated implementation among various stakeholders, including civil society and the private sector. The role requires a strong focus on inclusion, particularly for marginalized groups, and aims to create a robust case for ambitious NDCs aligned with the 1.5 °C target. The coordinator will work closely with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and will be responsible for integrating inputs from various consultations into the draft NDC, ensuring compliance with international guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage consultation processes within the environmental sector and with relevant federal agencies and subnational governments to update the NDC goals consensually.
Develop and execute proposals for sectoral dialogue forums, identifying priority measures for each sector.
Facilitate citizen participation in the NDC formulation process, ensuring compliance with the Escazú Agreement.
Systematize inputs from consultations and integrate them into the draft NDC 3.
Support authorities in the approval process of the final NDC version by the Intersecretarial Commission on Climate Change.
Generate reports, presentations, and technical notes as requested.
Assist in the technical, financial, and operational evaluation of the project.
Perform other necessary functions for the efficient operation of the office.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum academic requirements include a master's degree in Environmental Sciences or Social Sciences with a focus on relevant issues (Public Policy, law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Environmental Law, Climate Financing, etc.), or a bachelor's degree with at least two years of relevant professional experience in climate policy management. Candidates with a master's degree do not require prior professional experience. At least four years of professional experience is required for master's degree holders, and six years for bachelor's degree holders, particularly in building partnerships with civil society, academia, and the private sector regarding climate change.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master's level or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences or Social Sciences with a focus on relevant issues. A bachelor's degree in the same fields is acceptable but requires additional professional experience.
Experience:
The position requires a minimum of four years of professional experience for candidates with a master's degree, or six years for those with a bachelor's degree. Relevant experience should include managing climate policies and sustainable development initiatives, with a preference for experience in Mexico. Candidates should also have experience in designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating climate adaptation and mitigation projects.
Languages:
Fluency in both English and Spanish is mandatory for this position, as effective communication in both languages is essential for the role.
