Job Overview: The Communication Officer position is situated within the Internal Communication and Branding Unit of the Department of Communication and Public Information (DCOMM). This department collaborates with all ILO headquarters departments and field offices to implement a comprehensive communication strategy. The role involves creating engaging multimedia content for internal audiences, contributing to internal communication and networking events, supporting communication for major organizational events, and providing editorial coordination for the ILO intranet. The incumbent will report to the head of the Internal Communication and Branding Unit and is expected to foster a cohesive communication approach across the organization, ensuring consistency in messaging and branding at all levels.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Produce high-quality multimedia content and creative means to convey important information to ILO staff through the intranet and other internal communication channels.
Develop and support initiatives that promote communication and networking among staff, including feedback mechanisms such as campaigns and staff surveys.
Organize and support the promotion and branding of engaging events for staff, including plenary meetings, staff recognition, and long service awards, as well as information sessions in various formats.
Assist in communication for major ILO events, both internal and external, by collaborating with responsible departments and stakeholders to provide guidance on communication, branding, dissemination, and other communication products.
Support awareness campaigns and staff engagement initiatives that promote an inclusive and respectful ILO culture on priority themes, including environmental sustainability, disability inclusion, and prevention of misconduct.
Develop and maintain editorial guidelines for the ILO intranet, ensuring editorial oversight of the intranet's homepage and secondary portals, and collaborating with content creators to maintain engaging and relevant user-focused content.
Assist in editing and proofreading content in line with the unit's content strategy in all three working languages (English, French, and Spanish) and coordinate translation efforts.
Monitor and evaluate intranet user analytics to assess engagement and effectiveness, providing recommendations for improvements.
Perform other relevant tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess excellent writing skills and experience in internal communication campaigns and staff engagement. They should have experience in editorial coordination and project management for intranet and website content. A good understanding of digital content creation tools and techniques, both written and audiovisual, is essential. The ability to tailor messages for culturally diverse audiences and a solid understanding of the ILO's mandate and program of activities are also required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with experience in SharePoint, would be advantageous. Candidates should be able to work independently and as part of a team, possess good analytical skills, and demonstrate gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory behavior in a multicultural environment.
Educational Background: A higher education degree (master's or equivalent) in communication, journalism, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor's or equivalent) in one of the aforementioned fields or another relevant area, combined with two additional years of relevant experience, may be accepted in lieu of a higher degree.
Experience: At least five years of professional experience in public information or related fields is required for this position. Candidates should demonstrate a strong background in communication strategies and practices, particularly in an international or multicultural context.
Languages: Candidates must have an excellent command of two of the ILO's working languages, one of which must be English. Knowledge of a third working language would be an advantage.
Additional Notes: The initial contract will be issued for a period of twenty-four months, with the selected external candidate undergoing a probationary period for the first two years of their assignment. Any extension of the contract beyond the probationary period is subject to satisfactory conduct and performance.
