Job Overview:
The position of Partner UNEP is focused on managing and implementing projects related to climate and environmental initiatives, particularly in the context of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). The role requires a deep understanding of environmental policies and practices, as well as the ability to engage with various stakeholders, including government ministries and local communities. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development and execution of strategies that align with UNEP's goals in the Eastern Africa region, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This includes overseeing project management activities, ensuring compliance with international standards, and fostering collaboration among diverse groups to achieve sustainable outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage and coordinate project/programme activities related to REDD+, climate change, and environmental management.
  • Develop and implement project work plans, ensuring alignment with UNEP's strategic objectives.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, including government ministries, NGOs, and local communities, to promote collaboration and support for project initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate project progress, preparing reports and recommendations for improvement.
  • Conduct research and analysis on environmental policies and practices, providing insights to inform decision-making.
  • Facilitate workshops and training sessions to build capacity among stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with international and national regulatory frameworks related to REDD+ and carbon markets.
  • Represent UNEP in meetings and conferences, advocating for environmental sustainability and climate action.

Required Qualifications:
  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Forestry, Climate Change, Geography, Sustainable Development, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the above-mentioned fields with an additional two (2) years of relevant experience can be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in project/programme management activities, preferably in REDD+, climate change, forestry, or environmental management.
  • Thorough understanding of the political economy of the Eastern Africa region, especially of DRC, is an asset.
  • Familiarity with international and national regulatory frameworks related to REDD+, carbon markets, and the Paris Agreement is desirable.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment is essential.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Forestry, Climate Change, Geography, or Sustainable Development. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in these fields, combined with two additional years of relevant experience, is acceptable. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of environmental issues and the frameworks governing them.

Experience:
The position requires at least two (2) years of relevant experience in project or programme management, particularly in areas related to REDD+, climate change, forestry, or environmental management. Candidates should have a thorough understanding of the political landscape in the Eastern Africa region, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and experience working with various stakeholders, including government entities and local communities. Familiarity with international standards and frameworks related to REDD+ and carbon markets is also highly desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written French is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in spoken and written English is desirable, and knowledge of any other official UN languages would be considered an asset. This linguistic capability is essential for effective communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
