Job Overview: This internship opportunity is situated within the Directorate of Operations at the ESA Headquarters in Paris, France. The selected intern will be involved in the Space Safety Programme Coordination and the management of the Protect Accelerator. The internship lasts for six months and focuses on supporting the coordination of the Space Safety programme, particularly in relation to Zero Debris initiatives and the development of space weather services in Europe. Interns will have the chance to engage with various stakeholders, including ESA Member States and international partners, while contributing to significant projects aimed at enhancing space safety and sustainability.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be tasked with supporting the coordination of the Space Safety programme by preparing reports, briefs, background materials, and presentations for interactions with coordinators, ESA Member States, and other partners. Additionally, the intern will assist in the activities of the Protect Accelerator, which aims to connect space and non-space actors to protect European assets from space hazards. This includes fostering collaborative capacity-building activities and ensuring the availability of space weather services in Europe. The intern will have the opportunity to choose between two main topics: supporting Space Safety programme coordination or supporting the Protect Accelerator activities, both of which are crucial for achieving a Zero Debris future by 2030.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be university students, preferably in their final or second-to-last year of a Master's level course. They must remain enrolled at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A strong academic background in engineering, science, public policy, political science, or international relations is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should possess good knowledge of English or French, with proficiency in another Member State language considered an asset.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should be pursuing a Master's degree in a relevant field such as engineering, science, public policy, political science, or international relations. The internship is specifically designed for students who are in their final or second-to-last year of their university studies, ensuring that they have a solid academic foundation to contribute effectively to the projects at ESA.
Experience: While prior professional experience is not mandatory, any academic or practical experience in engineering, science, public policy, political science, or international relations will be viewed favorably. Languages: The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is required for the internship.
