The organization focuses on equity, aiming to address the needs of the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families. UNICEF employs thousands of staff globally, working collaboratively with governments, civil society, and communities to implement programs that support children's rights and development.

Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the WASH Specialist (P3) and technical supervision from the SBC Specialist. The primary role involves generating and utilizing research and data to inform the design, measurement, and monitoring of Social and Behavior Change (SBC) programs related to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). The volunteer will assist in gathering and analyzing data on WASH behaviors, participate in monitoring and reporting initiatives, and facilitate community feedback mechanisms to enhance engagement. The position also requires designing and implementing evidence-based SBC activities, advocating for resource mobilization, and supporting capacity building for UNICEF staff and partners. The volunteer will play a crucial role in promoting sustainable hygiene practices and improving sanitation access in Sierra Leone, particularly in the context of ongoing public health challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in generating and utilizing research, data, and evidence to inform SBC programs and outcomes. This includes supporting data collection and research utilization for WASH programs, participating in monitoring and reporting of WASH-related SBC initiatives, and facilitating community feedback mechanisms.
  • Design, plan, and implement SBC activities backed by social and behavioral evidence. Collaborate with specialists and partners to develop and implement SBC strategies, select and coordinate activities for effective community engagement, and integrate innovative approaches into WASH SBC programming.
  • Support the operationalization of WASH SBC initiatives by mobilizing resources, coordinating across stakeholders, and building partnerships. This involves advocating for SBC initiatives, facilitating coordination with partners, and supporting the planning and integration of SBC strategies.
  • Promote continuous learning and capacity building in SBC for UNICEF staff and partners. This includes compiling training materials, promoting best practices, and enhancing capacity for emergency preparedness and response in WASH and climate-related programs.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess strong analytical skills, experience in data collection and analysis, and a solid understanding of social and behavioral change principles. Familiarity with WASH programs and community engagement strategies is essential. The candidate should also demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. Proficiency in project management and advocacy is highly desirable, along with a commitment to UNICEF's mission and values.

Educational Background:
A degree in social sciences, public health, environmental science, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in WASH, SBC, or community development would be an advantage. Candidates should have a strong academic background that supports their understanding of the complexities involved in promoting hygiene and sanitation practices.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in social and behavior change communication, public health, or WASH-related programs. Experience working in humanitarian contexts or with international organizations is preferred. The ability to demonstrate previous success in implementing community engagement strategies and mobilizing resources will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Sierra Leone would be an asset, as it would facilitate better communication and engagement with communities. Proficiency in French or other languages relevant to the region may also be considered advantageous.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time volunteer role with a focus on community engagement and capacity building. The duration of the contract is typically for a year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability. The role may involve travel within Sierra Leone to support field activities and engage with local communities. Compensation includes a monthly stipend to cover living expenses, and volunteers may also receive training and professional development opportunities during their tenure.
