Job Overview: The Chief of the Trade Logistics Branch is responsible for planning and implementing the substantive work programme of the Branch. This includes overseeing the management of trade logistics activities, ensuring timely execution of programmed activities, and coordinating work both within the Division and with other UN organizations. The Chief will lead and supervise the work programme, ensuring high-quality outputs and compliance with relevant mandates. The role involves preparing analytical reports for intergovernmental bodies, managing the technical cooperation programme, and fostering collaboration with international organizations such as the WTO and World Bank. The Chief will also oversee administrative tasks, including budget preparation and staff performance evaluations, while promoting teamwork and communication within the Branch.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Chief will lead the substantive work of the Trade Logistics Branch, coordinating activities across various work units and UN agencies. Responsibilities include preparing and overseeing reports on trade logistics, ensuring high-quality standards for outputs, and managing the Branch's work programme. The Chief will also oversee the technical cooperation programme, prepare budgets, and evaluate staff performance. Additionally, the Chief will represent the Division at international meetings, manage the organization of seminars, and foster collaboration with other institutions. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills to navigate complex trade and logistics challenges.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess in-depth knowledge of trade and logistics development issues at local, national, and international levels. They should demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality economic analyses and reports, as well as develop and implement innovative approaches to address challenges faced by developing economies. Strong leadership skills, including the ability to empower others and drive change, are essential. Candidates should also exhibit professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to maintain high standards of work.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in trade logistics or a related field at the international level is required. Candidates should have at least eight years of experience in programme and project planning and implementation, particularly in executing major multilateral technical cooperation projects. Experience in leading and managing teams, as well as working within international organizations, is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position. Knowledge of another UN official language is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a multilingual environment.
Additional Notes: This is a temporary position available for a period of six months, starting in January 2025, with the possibility of extension based on the continuation of need, availability of the post, and satisfactory performance.
