Job Overview:
The intern will work under the supervision of a technical expert in the Vaccine-preventable Diseases and Immunization Programme (VPI). The primary focus of this internship is to support the implementation of the European Immunization Agenda 2030 (EIA2030), which aims to enhance immunization systems across the WHO European Region. The intern will engage in various tasks such as reviewing literature, conducting surveys, and assisting in the preparation of reports related to vaccine-preventable diseases. This role is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of immunization strategies and the operational aspects of public health initiatives. The intern will also gain valuable experience in data management, communication, and the development of health-related materials, contributing to the overall goals of the VPI programme.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's responsibilities will include reviewing relevant literature and conducting surveys on vaccine-preventable diseases and immunization strategies, contributing to the preparation of the annual report. The intern will conduct web research and data collection on immunization trends and global health perspectives. Organizing and managing data, documents, and reports will be essential, as well as supporting the development of tools, guidelines, and handbooks. The intern will assist in drafting, formatting, and editing policy briefs, tool kits, manuals, brochures, and reports. Additionally, the intern will support the organization of workshops, meetings, conferences, and events, and participate in ongoing departmental projects, gaining hands-on experience in public health initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must have completed at least three years of full-time university studies in global health, public health, or a related field prior to starting the internship. They must also be enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification. Core competencies required for this position include teamwork, respect for individual and cultural differences, and effective communication. Interns should demonstrate skills in communication, willingness to learn from mistakes, and the ability to produce quality results while working collaboratively with team members. Proficiency in commonly used computer software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is also necessary.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed at least three years of university studies in a relevant field such as global health or public health. They should be currently enrolled in a course of study that leads to a formal qualification, ensuring that they have a solid academic foundation to support their internship responsibilities.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have experience in research and/or drafting reports, with academic or research experience in public health or global health being highly desirable. Experience in fieldwork or in developing countries is also advantageous. Participation in volunteer work, community service, or involvement in student or professional associations will be considered a plus, as it demonstrates a commitment to public health and community engagement.

Languages:
Fluent knowledge of English is essential for this position. Intermediate knowledge of any other UN language is considered desirable, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the international context of the WHO.

  • Interns do not receive a salary; however, they will be provided with a living allowance of approximately USD 1,875 per month, along with a monthly lunch allowance of USD 176 to cover meal expenses. All interns will also receive accident and medical insurance coverage. Candidates should be aware that internships at WHO are highly competitive, and only a small number of applicants will be accepted each year. Living abroad can be expensive, and finding accommodation may pose challenges. Selected candidates will need to provide certified copies of proof of enrollment in an eligible course of studies, a completed WHO medical certificate of fitness for work, and contact details for reference checks.
