MINUSCA operates with a significant personnel presence, including 11,650 military personnel and 2,080 police personnel, and aims to create conditions conducive to reducing the threats posed by armed groups. The mission has subsumed the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA) and has taken over authority in military and police matters from the African Union-led peacekeeping operation (MISCA).

Job Overview:
The Translator position within MINUSCA involves providing high-quality translation services between French and English across a wide range of subjects pertinent to the United Nations' work. The role requires self-revision of translated documents to ensure they meet the standards set by the UN. The Translator will be responsible for translating documents that cover political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical fields. In addition to translation, the role includes revising and editing texts translated by other translators to ensure linguistic quality, clarity, accuracy, and adherence to established terminology and style. The Translator will also be expected to conduct research to resolve terminological issues and maintain a consistent output speed while meeting specified deadlines. The position requires collaboration with the Chief of Unit to perform quality control activities and ensure the integrity and consistency of translated materials. The Translator must aim for a high standard of accuracy and faithfulness to the original text, while also identifying new terminology for consideration by the supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Translating documents from French to English and vice versa, ensuring self-revision to meet UN standards.
  • Revising and editing translations done by other translators to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Utilizing various sources of reference and conducting research to address terminological challenges.
  • Maintaining an adequate speed and volume of output, considering the complexity of the texts and deadlines.
  • Assisting the Chief of Unit in quality control activities to ensure the integrity of translated materials.
  • Striving for high accuracy and consistency in translations, adhering to established terminology and style.
  • Identifying new terminology and submitting it for supervisor review.
  • Providing interpretation services during meetings, translating speeches or statements from French to English and vice versa.
  • Taking notes during meetings and utilizing them for further reference.

Required Qualifications:
