Job Details
Job Posting Organization: The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection, and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues. The organization operates in over 180 countries and has a diverse workforce committed to improving labor standards globally. The ILO emphasizes diversity and encourages applications from qualified individuals, including women, persons with disabilities, and those from underrepresented countries.
Job Overview: The internship program at the ILO provides talented individuals with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of international labor issues by directly participating in the work of the organization. Interns will gain practical experience related to their field of study while contributing to the ILO's mission. The internship is not intended to lead to a career at the ILO, and there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship. Interns will work on projects related to adequate wage setting, which is crucial for ensuring a decent standard of living for workers and their families while maintaining the viability of businesses. The internship will involve working on the SAW (Sufficient Wage Setting) projects funded by the Netherlands and Germany, which aim to support wage-setting mechanisms and enhance understanding of living wages in Côte d'Ivoire.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will assist in various tasks, including the production and dissemination of technical materials such as studies, guidelines, and training materials targeting different audiences, including the government, trade unions, and employers' organizations. They will support capacity-building activities and contribute to the documentation of best practices and lessons learned from the SAW projects. Additionally, interns will help monitor project progress, collect data, and prepare reports. They will also contribute to the visibility and communication of project results and maintain databases of stakeholders and donors. Interns are expected to dedicate 10-20% of their time to administrative tasks and will work under the supervision of the ILO Country Office Director and the National Coordinator of the SAW projects.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team. They should be able to work in a multicultural environment and demonstrate gender-sensitive behavior and attitudes. Knowledge of wage and income issues will be considered an asset, and candidates should be proactive and willing to learn.
Educational Background: Candidates should be pursuing or have recently completed a Master's degree in political or social sciences, economics, law, development studies, international relations, communication, or a related field. The internship is open to those in their final year of a graduate program or who have completed their degree within the past year.
Experience: Relevant professional experience or knowledge of wage and income issues will be advantageous for candidates applying for this internship. Previous internships or volunteer work in related fields will also be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in French, both written and spoken, is required. A good command of English would be an asset, as it may facilitate communication with international stakeholders and enhance the intern's ability to engage with a broader audience.
Additional Notes: The internship is for a duration of 6 months, and candidates must ensure they meet specific criteria before applying, including not having a close relative working at the ILO and this being their first internship with the organization. Interns will receive a monthly allowance based on the cost of living in Abidjan, and they are responsible for their travel expenses to the internship location. The ILO does not cover any accident or illness costs during the internship, and candidates must have their own health and accident insurance. The ILO does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and applicants should be cautious of fraudulent communications.
