Job Overview:
The Associate Regulatory Affairs Manager will play a crucial role in the Federal Advocacy Team at the American Heart Association, based in Washington, DC. This position involves monitoring, analyzing, and drafting responses to federal regulatory issues, particularly those related to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The role requires collaboration with advocacy, grassroots, and communications teams to develop strategies that advance the AHA's regulatory priorities. The Associate Manager will also participate in internal committees and external coalitions, representing the AHA in meetings with federal agency officials. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence health policy and contribute to the AHA's mission of promoting health equity and improving public health outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Monitor regulatory issues in defined areas daily and identify opportunities to advance the American Heart Association’s priorities.
  • Review proposed and final rules and prepare summaries for distribution to staff and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and partners to prepare regulatory comments and correspondence to federal agencies.
  • Participate in meetings with federal agency staff to discuss regulatory matters.
  • Assist in briefing high-level staff and volunteers in preparation for federal agency hearings and meetings, including drafting written and oral statements and presentations.
  • Support the development, planning, and execution of issue advocacy campaigns to advance key regulatory priorities.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with federal agency staff and coalition partners to facilitate collaboration.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with staff in other departments, monitoring and reporting on issues related to their work.
  • Attend advisory committee meetings, federal agency meetings, coalition meetings, press conferences, issue briefings, and hearings as needed. 1
  • Provide content for Federal Advocacy communications as required.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in regulatory affairs, government relations, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
  • Strong analytical skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and a willingness to learn.
  • Proven ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Health, Nutrition, or a related field. This educational background provides a solid foundation for understanding the regulatory landscape and the intersection of health policy and advocacy.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience in regulatory affairs, government relations, or a related field. Candidates with additional experience, particularly in writing regulatory comment letters and interacting with policymakers, will be preferred. Experience working within a federal agency such as HHS, FDA, CDC, or USDA is highly desirable and will enhance the candidate's ability to navigate the regulatory environment effectively.

Languages:
While no specific language requirements are mentioned, proficiency in English is mandatory due to the nature of the role, which involves extensive communication with federal agencies and stakeholders. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly in diverse communities.

Additional Notes:
This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC, with hybrid work arrangements available. The expected pay range for this role is between $65,000 and $72,000, commensurate with experience. The American Heart Association offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as a robust retirement program with employer matching. Employees are also entitled to Paid Time Off (PTO) starting at a minimum of 16 days per year, increasing with seniority, and 12 paid holidays annually.
