Job Overview: The Research Manager will oversee the implementation of research cycles within the REACH unit, which includes preparation, data collection, analysis, drafting, dissemination, and evaluation stages. This role requires engaging with partners to maximize their impact and ensuring efficient resource use. The Research Manager will lead projects related to cash and voucher assistance (CVA) and climate preparedness, while also expanding the unit's portfolio to support humanitarian responses. The position is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with significant travel to Kampala, Uganda, and requires a candidate with experience in managing teams and projects in complex humanitarian settings.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Research Manager's responsibilities include direct management of international and national assessment team members, ensuring comprehensive briefing of staff on research objectives, monitoring data collection processes, and maintaining communication with IMPACT HQ. The RM will also oversee the drafting and dissemination of research products, engage in strategy development, represent REACH/IMPACT in external meetings, and ensure accountability to communities. Additionally, the RM will manage the team’s performance, conduct regular check-ins, and support staff welfare, while also contributing to the development of the REACH Ethiopia country strategy.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess excellent academic qualifications, including a Master’s degree, and have 3-5 years of relevant work experience in program management, evaluation, and assessments, particularly in CVA and disaster risk reduction (DRR). Previous experience in managing teams in a humanitarian context is essential, along with skills in conducting impactful applied research. Strong management, coordination, organizational, and planning skills are required, as well as experience with external engagement and familiarity with the humanitarian coordination system.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree is required for this position, reflecting the advanced level of expertise needed to manage complex research cycles and engage with various stakeholders effectively.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have 3-5 years of relevant work experience, particularly in program management and assessments within humanitarian settings. Experience in a senior management role in an INGO team is preferred, along with a proven track record of managing teams and implementing projects in challenging environments.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication and report writing are crucial. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not specified as mandatory.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 12 months, with a salary range of 3,040 CHF to 3,240 CHF monthly before income tax, plus a monthly living allowance of 300 USD. The organization provides accommodation and food in a guesthouse, health insurance, life insurance, and repatriation assistance. Staff are entitled to annual leave of 36 days per year, and public holidays of the country of assignment. The position requires a willingness to relocate to Ethiopia and live in the organization’s guesthouse, with up to 50% travel to Kampala. Pre-departure training and enrolment in a foundational learning program are also included.
