Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists and engineers from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, with its research facilities and collaborations extending globally. CERN's mission is to explore the fundamental structure of the universe, using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study fundamental particles and their interactions.
Job Overview: As a Planning Engineer within the ATLAS Technical Coordination at CERN, you will be instrumental in overseeing and managing the installation schedule during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). This role requires you to maintain an up-to-date installation schedule, report any delays, and propose effective mitigation strategies to recover lost time. The ATLAS project encompasses a complex construction program with several sub-projects, necessitating close collaboration with various Project Engineers and Project Leaders. You will also be a key member of the Project Management Office (PMO), contributing to the preparation of quarterly status reports and assisting Upgrade Project Leaders in updating schedules and reporting progress. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring that the ATLAS activities are executed efficiently and effectively during this critical phase of the project.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary responsibilities will include developing and maintaining the ATLAS installation schedules for Long Shutdown 3 (LS3), actively participating in all schedule baseline changes due to the evolution of the LS3 program. You will monitor and review the progress of activities during planning meetings, collaborating closely with Project Engineers to ensure alignment and timely execution. Reporting any delays to the Technical Coordination Management and proposing mitigation measures will be essential to your role. Additionally, you will contribute to the continuous improvement of scheduling tools and play a leading role in the quarterly status reporting process for the Phase-2 Upgrade projects. This includes assisting Upgrade Project Leaders in preparing updated schedules, progress reports, and schedule baseline changes. You will also supervise the ATLAS team responsible for maintaining the interface with the ATLAS Oracle database, collecting requirements for the evolution of existing information-management tools, and establishing priorities for maintenance and development activities.
Required Qualifications: To be considered for this position, you must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Engineering, preferably in Mechanical, Industrial, Civil, or Systems Engineering, or a related field. You should have demonstrated experience in planning, forecasting, and resource coordination, ideally within an engineering environment. A strong knowledge of relevant planning software, such as MS Project, is essential. Experience in liaising with internal and external stakeholders, initial experience in coordinating technical activities, and familiarity with databases and interfacing tools will be advantageous. Additionally, experience in team supervision is considered a plus.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering field. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of the engineering tasks involved in the ATLAS project and for effectively managing the planning and coordination of activities during the Long Shutdown 3 (LS3).
Experience: The position requires demonstrated experience in planning, forecasting, and resource coordination, preferably in an engineering context. Candidates should have a solid understanding of project management principles and practices, as well as experience in coordinating technical activities. Familiarity with databases and interfacing tools is an asset, and prior experience in team supervision will be beneficial for this role.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the working language at CERN. Additionally, a commitment to learning French is expected, as it will enhance communication within the organization and with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for 4 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. The role may involve work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is EP-ATL-PO-2026-200-LD.
