Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading research institution established in 195
It is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics and technology, employing over 2,500 staff members and collaborating with thousands of scientists from around the world. CERN operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology. The organization fosters an environment of innovation and collaboration, where diverse professionals from various fields work together to tackle complex scientific challenges. Diversity is a core value at CERN, and it remains central to its mission and continued success.
Job Overview: The Software Developer - Beam Optics position is situated within the Linear and Non-Linear Optics (LNO) Section of CERN's Accelerator and Beam Physics (ABP) Group. The primary focus of this role is to develop advanced software and analysis tools that facilitate precise beam-optics measurements and corrections, which are crucial for the operation of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The successful candidate will be integral to the Optics Measurement and Correction (OMC) team, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the HL-LHC and supporting its innovative physics program. The role involves maintaining and enhancing the core OMC framework, exploring software solutions for improved optics measurement efficiency, and developing new graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for use in the CERN Control Centre during optics commissioning. Additionally, the candidate will participate in the analysis of optics measurements within CERN's accelerators, ensuring that the software solutions developed are robust and effective in meeting the operational needs of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain and extend the core OMC framework and toolset utilized during LHC commissioning and operation.
Investigate and implement software solutions to enhance the efficiency and capability of optics measurement and corrections in the LHC.
Update accelerator model creation and correction algorithms to leverage new simulation tools.
Assess the feasibility of automating key measurement and analysis workflows, implementing solutions where applicable.
Develop new GUIs and analysis tools for use in the CERN Control Centre during optics commissioning.
Actively participate in the analysis of optics measurements in CERN accelerators, contributing to the overall success of the HL-LHC project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a background in programming and software design, with a strong proficiency in Python. Familiarity with version control systems, particularly GitHub, and experience in GUI development are essential. Knowledge of particle accelerator physics and operation is advantageous. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a structured approach to work, possess good prioritization skills, and have the ability to deliver results within required timelines. Strong teamwork and communication skills are crucial, along with a willingness to share knowledge and engage in knowledge transfer activities. An interest in developing and maintaining software solutions for applied physics, especially in the field of accelerator physics, is highly desirable.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a professional background in Physics, Software Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience is required, or alternatively, a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is important that candidates have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a professional background in relevant fields, with specific experience in software development and programming. A minimum of 2 years of post-graduation experience is expected for those with a Master's degree, while candidates with a PhD should have up to 3 years of relevant experience. Experience in GUI development and familiarity with particle accelerator physics will be considered advantageous.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being essential. This bilingual requirement ensures effective communication within the diverse CERN community.
Additional Notes: The job closing date is set for 26.10.2026 at 23:59 CEST. The contract duration is initially for 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, with hybrid working flexibility. The target start date for this position is 01-January-202
The role may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the organization's needs. The job reference is BE-ABP-LNO-2026-132-GRAP, and it falls under the field of Applied Physics. Compensation includes a monthly net stipend ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, depending on the candidate's degree, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package based on individual circumstances. Additionally, on-the-job and formal training opportunities, including language classes, are provided.
