The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Accra is part of a global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) managed by the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC). UNIC Accra serves as the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Nigeria and works closely with the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), UN agencies, media organizations, civil society, educational institutions, youth networks, and digital communities to promote awareness and understanding of the work and priorities of the United Nations. The organization aims to enhance the visibility and understanding of the UN's mission and activities in Ghana, thereby fostering a more informed public and encouraging engagement with UN initiatives.

Job Overview:
The Social Media Intern at UNIC Accra will play a crucial role in supporting the Centre's digital communications, online engagement, multimedia storytelling, and public outreach efforts. The intern will be responsible for creating engaging content for various social media platforms and supporting campaigns that focus on sustainable development, peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, climate action, gender equality, human rights, information integrity, youth engagement, and other UN priority issues. This position requires a proactive approach to enhancing the visibility of the United Nations in Ghana and involves direct reporting to the National Information Office (NIO) at UNIC Accra. The internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in digital communications within a global organization, allowing the intern to contribute meaningfully to the UN's mission while developing their skills in a professional environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will support various functions under the supervision of the NIO, including:
  • Social Media Content Creation and Management (40%): Drafting, editing, and publishing content for UNIC Accra's social media platforms such as X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Producing multimedia content like videos, graphics, and infographics tailored for Ghanaian audiences. Monitoring social media trends and maintaining a content calendar aligned with UN campaigns.
  • Digital Engagement and Community Management (25%): Engaging with journalists, students, youth groups, and civil society organizations. Monitoring comments and discussions on social media platforms and identifying opportunities for digital campaigns.
  • Research, Analytics, and Monitoring (20%): Conducting research on digital media trends and tracking analytics to prepare reports on social media performance.
  • Administrative and Communication Support (15%): Organizing meetings and events, drafting newsletters, and maintaining digital archives. The intern will also perform other communication-related duties as assigned, ensuring a comprehensive support role within the UNIC Accra team.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Additionally, familiarity with major social media platforms and digital engagement practices is essential. Basic skills in multimedia editing tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite are desirable, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. An understanding of Ghana's digital media ecosystem and an interest in ethical digital communications are also beneficial. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, but a relevant field of study is necessary.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or having completed a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Applicants must provide proof of their academic status, such as an official certificate, at a later stage of the application process.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship type they are applying for. This ensures that the intern has a foundational understanding of the relevant topics and skills necessary for the role.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of one or more Ghanaian languages is desirable, as it can enhance communication and engagement with local audiences. Additionally, knowledge of another official UN language is considered an asset, broadening the intern's capabilities within the UN framework.
