Job Overview: The Legal Assistant position at IOM Greece is crucial in addressing the needs of unaccompanied minors (UMC) residing in Greece. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Senior ProgrammeCoordinator and the Child Protection Assistant, providing daily care and legal counseling to UMC. This role involves organizing information sessions about the rights of UMC, assisting with legal procedures related to asylum and family reunification, and maintaining communication with relevant authorities to ensure the well-being of UMC. The candidate will also be responsible for documenting actions taken and ensuring compliance with legal and administrative deadlines. This position is vital in contributing to the provision of targeted care interventions and support for vulnerable children in the migration context.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Legal Assistant include:
Providing daily care to unaccompanied minors in the assigned accommodation facility.
Offering legal counseling on individual and group levels regarding the rights, obligations, and procedures concerning the legal status of UMC.
Organizing information sessions in collaboration with facility coordinators and guardians on topics such as asylum procedures, family reunification, and relocation schemes.
Supporting the examination of applications for international protection and family reunification, as well as assisting with residence permit applications and other legal procedures.
Referring cases to programs that provide free legal support and representation for minors in administrative, criminal, or civil courts.
Maintaining accurate records of actions taken for UMCs and ensuring that all legal and administrative deadlines are met.
Collaborating closely with authorities to ensure the well-being of UMCs.
Undertaking official travel as required to support legal procedures for UMCs.
Performing additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Legal Assistant position include:
A university degree in Law from an accredited academic institution.
A professional license and/or certificate of registration with the relevant professional association.
One year of relevant work experience is preferred, particularly in a similar role or at an IOM Emergency Accommodation Facility.
Familiarity with direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees is advantageous.
Experience working in a multicultural environment is also preferred.
Proficiency in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office) is considered an asset.
A valid driver’s license with at least five years of driving experience is an advantage.
Strong communication skills, personal commitment, and efficiency are essential.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a university degree in Law from an accredited academic institution. This educational background is critical as it provides the necessary legal knowledge and understanding required to assist unaccompanied minors effectively in navigating their legal rights and obligations.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have at least one year of relevant work experience, which can include previous roles in legal assistance, child protection, or working with migrants and refugees. Experience in an IOM Emergency Accommodation Facility is particularly valued, as it indicates familiarity with the specific challenges and needs of unaccompanied minors in a migration context. Languages: Fluency in Greek is mandatory for this position, along with a certified working knowledge of English or French, both oral and written. Additional Notes: The position will be based in the Attica Region, with the exact location to be advised at a later stage. Candidates should be prepared to work in day/night shifts, including holidays and weekends. The appointment is subject to funding confirmation and medical fitness certification.
