Job Overview:
The Editor position is situated within the Editorial Unit of the Conference and Documentation Services Section at ESCAP. The incumbent will be responsible for editing a variety of documents, ensuring they meet the United Nations standards for accuracy, clarity, and cohesion. This role requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining high standards of output. The editor will engage with authors to clarify ambiguities, rectify errors, and provide guidance on editorial policies. The position also involves utilizing language technologies and tools to enhance the editing process and contribute to the overall quality of documentation produced by ESCAP. Continuous professional development is encouraged, and the editor will be expected to undertake cross-assignments as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Editor will perform a range of duties including: editing documents of a specialized or technical nature to ensure they conform to United Nations standards; carrying out extensive editing tasks such as rewriting and restructuring texts for improved readability; consulting with author departments to clarify ambiguities and verify the accuracy of content; providing authors with information on editorial policies; utilizing language technologies effectively; identifying new terminology for approval; engaging in self-study to enhance skills; undertaking cross-assignments for other language functions; contributing to data collection and analysis; and performing other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level degree from a recognized university or equivalent institution. They must have passed the relevant United Nations Competitive Examination for Editors or the combined examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, and Verbatim Reporters. This requirement may be waived for candidates who passed relevant examinations before 2017, subject to an assessment test. Candidates should demonstrate strong writing skills, a high standard of accuracy, and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining productivity.

Educational Background:
A first-level degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status is required. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of editing within the context of the United Nations and its diverse subject matter.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of experience in editing within the United Nations is required. Candidates should have experience with web-based applications and electronic editing tools, as well as familiarity with editing in-session documentation such as resolutions and outcome documents. Experience in delivering training or engaging in outreach activities is considered desirable.

Languages:
A perfect command of English is mandatory, as it must be the candidate's main language. Additionally, knowledge of at least two other official languages is required, as assessed during the relevant Competitive Examination. Proficiency in multiple languages is advantageous and aligns with the United Nations' commitment to multilingualism.
