Job Overview:
The position of UNESCAP Specialist on Research and Advocacy is crucial for supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development within the Asia-Pacific region. The individual will be responsible for facilitating follow-up and review activities, particularly in relation to Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). This role involves organizing workshops, documenting outputs, and developing background documents that highlight country-specific examples of VNRs. The specialist will also coordinate the 2026 VNR Twinning and Peer Learning Programme, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among various stakeholders, including UN agencies and partner organizations. The position requires a proactive approach to managing logistics and partnerships for associated events, particularly the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD), which serves as a platform for sharing best practices and lessons learned in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support logistics and reporting for follow-up and review activities, including documenting VNR workshops and sessions, developing meeting reports, and updating tracking mechanisms for good practices in VNRs.
  • Develop a comprehensive VNR background document for the 14th APFSD, collaborating with relevant divisions and incorporating feedback from colleagues and senior management.
  • Coordinate the 2026 VNR Twinning and Peer Learning Programme, including developing terms of reference for twinning arrangements, moderating online spaces, and coordinating study tours.
  • Liaise with internal and external partners, including Resident Coordinators Offices and VNR focal points, to facilitate country requests for VNR assistance, organizing communications and meetings, and enhancing support partnerships.
  • Act as the focal point for logistics, partnerships, and communications for APFSD associated events, documenting lessons learned and ensuring regular updates to the APFSD webpage.
  • Support the team with organizational, communications, research, and preparatory processes as needed, contributing to the overall success of the APFSD and VNR initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong analytical, organizational, coordination, and drafting skills, with the ability to present information clearly and effectively. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is essential. Experience in supporting international events, conducting analysis, and engaging in partnerships is highly desirable. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a solid understanding of public policy, international relations, environmental management, or social sciences, and have a proven track record of research assistance and outreach.

Educational Background:
A degree in subjects related to public policy, international relations, environmental management, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in these areas will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates should have relevant experience in supporting international events, particularly those related to sustainable development and UN initiatives. Experience in research, analysis, and partnership engagement is crucial, with a focus on providing technical assistance and logistical support for high-level meetings and workshops.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Additional language skills may be considered an advantage, particularly in languages relevant to the Asia-Pacific region.
