Job Overview:
The Mechanical Technician position at CERN involves joining a multidisciplinary team focused on developing more efficient superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities for future accelerators. This hands-on role requires the technician to engage in various tasks after receiving dedicated training. The primary responsibilities include contributing to the improvement of thin-film coating technologies through the design, fabrication, commissioning, and operation of physical vapour deposition (PVD) equipment. The technician will be expected to utilize 3D CAD tools for designing mechanical components and coating equipment, as well as producing the necessary manufacturing and assembly drawings. The role also involves assembling, installing, testing, commissioning, and operating PVD coating systems and their associated equipment. The technician will participate in coating activities, document process procedures, and procure mechanical components for thin-film coating systems. Additionally, diagnosing faults, performing maintenance, and implementing mechanical improvements to existing coating systems are key expectations of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Technician include:

• Designing mechanical components and coating equipment using 3D CAD tools and producing associated manufacturing and assembly drawings.
• Assembling, installing, testing, commissioning, and operating physical vapour deposition coating systems and their associated equipment.
• Manufacturing and modifying metallic and ceramic components using conventional machining and CNC-based manufacturing techniques.
• Participating in coating activities, recording operating parameters, and documenting process procedures.
• Procuring mechanical components for thin-film coating systems.
• Diagnosing faults, carrying out maintenance, and implementing mechanical improvements to existing coating systems.
• Applying relevant safety protocols during all operations.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Mechanical Technician position include a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Candidates should possess a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles and practices, as well as a commitment to safety and quality in their work. Additionally, familiarity with vacuum systems and thin-film coating techniques is advantageous.
