Job Overview: The Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) at CERN is responsible for the electrical power-distribution network, which spans from 400 kV to 400/230V, as well as the fibre-optics infrastructure and signal and DC-power cabling for the accelerator complex. The position of Electrical Design Technician is situated within the electrical Design and Documentation Office (EN-EL-DDO). The successful candidate will support senior electrical designers by creating and modifying electrical drawings, designing low voltage distribution networks, performing cable and equipment sizing, and conducting LV protection studies. As the technician gains experience, they will take on increasingly complex design tasks. Additionally, the role involves overseeing quality-related activities within the Design Office, including managing the printing office and maintaining and updating design templates. This position is ideal for a junior technician looking to apply their knowledge of low voltage distribution circuits in a practical setting.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Electrical Design Technician include:
Preparing design drawings using CAD software.
Creating calculation notes utilizing ElecCalc/Caneco BT or similar tools.
Compiling bills of material and cabling tables for electrical-related equipment in Excel.
Updating Excel-based design templates to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Performing general quality-related tasks within the design office to maintain high standards.
Collaborating with senior electrical designers to support various design projects.
Engaging in continuous learning and professional development to enhance technical skills and knowledge in electrical design.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate experience in the design of low voltage distribution networks, cable sizing, and selectivity studies. Proficiency in producing drawings using AutoCAD or similar software is essential. An intermediate level of Microsoft Excel is required. Candidates should possess an understanding of low voltage distribution networks, including selectivity, calculation notes, European LV standards, and circuit protection. Knowledge of power systems, including voltage drop calculations and short circuit calculations, is also necessary. Familiarity with low voltage design calculation tools such as ElecCalc or Caneco is advantageous. Candidates should be proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel, and have a commitment to learning either English or French, depending on their primary language.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a general secondary education diploma. Candidates must have graduated in Electrical Engineering or a related field and have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. Applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience in the field of electrical engineering or a related discipline. This experience should ideally include practical exposure to low voltage distribution networks and design processes. Motivated candidates without direct design office experience may still be considered, provided they demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.
