Job Overview: The IDB Lab is seeking a dynamic and client-oriented individual to take on a pivotal role within its Venture Capital Investments Division at Headquarters. This position is crucial for leading operations that support the growth and consolidation of ventures aimed at addressing significant development and inclusion challenges across various sectors in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Fintech, Edtech, Healthtech, and Agtech/Biotech. The successful candidate will be responsible for originating and managing a portfolio of reimbursable operations, which includes both equity and debt investments. The role involves filling key funding gaps, bridging connections between public and private sectors, and mobilizing essential resources to support ventures with substantial socioeconomic or environmental impact potential. The candidate will work closely with various stakeholders to assess investment opportunities and negotiate terms, ensuring that the IDB Lab's investments align with its development objectives while also generating expected financial returns.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Equity Investment Consultant will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: originating deal flow by developing relationships with public and private institutions that support entrepreneurs, such as venture capital funds and accelerators; assessing investment opportunities in high-impact and high-growth startups, which includes leading or participating in due diligence, financial modeling, valuation analysis, and market and exit analysis; negotiating investment terms with startups in collaboration with Investment Officers, legal, and compliance teams; preparing investment memorandums and other strategic documents related to equity investments; creating presentations and materials to support investor relations, reporting, fundraising, and business development; supervising positions within the IDB Lab's financial portfolio, particularly focusing on direct equity investments in early-stage firms; and participating in the strategic management of equity investments to achieve development objectives while generating financial returns.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in Finance, Business, or other relevant fields. Equivalent combinations of education and professional experience may be considered. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of progressive experience in investment, preferably in venture capital, with a proven transactional track record that includes preparing Investment Memoranda, presentations to Investment Committees, and negotiating terms and conditions. Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean is highly valued, as it provides essential context for the role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree or an equivalent advanced degree in areas related to Finance, Business, or other relevant fields. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education and relevant professional experience may also be considered, reflecting the IDB's commitment to diverse educational pathways.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in investment, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience in venture capital. A relevant transactional track record is essential, including experience in preparing Investment Memoranda, making presentations to Investment Committees, and negotiating terms and conditions. Familiarity with the investment landscape in Latin America and the Caribbean will be highly regarded, as it is crucial for understanding the regional context and challenges.
Languages: Proficiency in both English and Portuguese is mandatory for this position. These language skills are essential for effective communication with stakeholders and partners in the region. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, but English and Portuguese are the primary requirements.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as a National Consultant role, which is a full-time position with a contract duration of 12 months, extendable up to 48 months, subject to eligibility.
