Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Applied Physicist include:
Designing and developing a dedicated test stand to study beam-dust interactions in accelerator environments.
Conducting cutting-edge research in collaboration with experts in beam physics, machine protection, and vacuum technology.
Developing and applying physics models for the charging and release mechanisms of macroscopic dust grains on conducting and insulating surfaces.
Designing and executing experimental tests to validate theoretical models.
Investigating controlled methods for producing and reproducing beam-dust interaction events.
Identifying and proposing mitigation strategies to minimize dust-induced beam losses in future accelerator facilities.
Collaborating effectively with experts from different technical domains while working independently.
Utilizing creative problem-solving skills to develop innovative solutions to complex challenges.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate experience in modeling physics phenomena and have a background in setting up and conducting laboratory experiments, including measurement analysis. Experience with numerical simulations and scientific computing is considered an asset. A solid understanding of particle accelerators and beam physics is essential, along with a strong foundation in classical electrodynamics. Proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python or MATLAB is required. The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with experts from various technical domains is crucial, as is the capacity for creative problem-solving and innovation.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate should possess a professional background in Physics or a related field. Candidates must have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a professional background in Physics or a related field, with specific experience requirements based on educational qualifications.
