Job Overview:
The Legal Intern position at ESCWA is designed for individuals who are keen to gain practical experience in legal research and analysis within the context of the United Nations. The intern will primarily focus on competition and consumer protection frameworks, particularly in relation to Oman’s building materials sector and the 10th National Development Plan (NDP). The role involves conducting targeted research, reviewing legal documents, and assisting in the preparation of reports and presentations. The intern will also support the organization of events such as the Arab Competition Forum and a regional consumer protection webinar. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with legal frameworks and contribute to meaningful projects that aim to improve market conditions in the Arab region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Intern - Legal Researcher is expected to perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: conducting preliminary research on assigned legal and regulatory topics, particularly in competition and consumer protection; supporting legal research related to Oman’s building materials sector; contributing to the legal assessment of Oman’s 10th National Development Plan; assisting in drafting, editing, and proofreading reports and presentations; supporting consumer protection initiatives, including a planned webinar; assisting with preparations for the Arab Competition Forum; gathering and organizing legal information and maintaining electronic reference files; and performing additional tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet several criteria: they must be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level), or have graduated with a university degree within the past year. Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications, demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Knowledge in legal analysis is desirable but not mandatory.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate program or in the final year of their undergraduate studies. A background in law or a related field is preferred, as the internship focuses on legal research and analysis. The ideal candidate should have a strong academic record and a demonstrated commitment to the principles of the United Nations.

Experience:
No prior working experience is required to apply for this internship. However, candidates should have a strong academic background and a demonstrated interest in legal issues, particularly those related to competition and consumer protection. Familiarity with legal research methodologies and tools will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, as these are the working languages of ESCWA. Proficiency in French is considered an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of French would enhance the candidate's ability to engage with a broader range of documents and stakeholders.

This internship is offered on a local basis, meaning that candidates must have the legal right to live and work in Lebanon. The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
