Job Overview: The Architectural Engineering Technician - Senior Associate position is a critical role within the Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office (HAMCO) of UNOPS. This position involves providing specialized technical support in architectural and engineering design, ensuring the accuracy and quality of design outputs for infrastructure and building projects. The role requires the candidate to integrate multiple processes to deliver high-quality design documentation and coordination. The successful candidate will contribute to impactful infrastructure development projects in the Horn of Africa, working in a dynamic environment that offers exposure to diverse project types and advanced design software. The position is essential for the effective implementation of development initiatives aimed at expanding access to healthcare, education, energy, and livelihoods in underserved regions, directly supporting HAMCO's mission of sustainable development and regional stability.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Architectural Engineering Technician - Senior Associate will perform a variety of duties under the supervision of the Senior Project Manager, including but not limited to:
Design Preparation: Contributing to the preparation of CAD drawings, 3D models, renderings, and design documentation for infrastructure and building projects. Supporting the development of design concepts and presentations to ensure timely, cost-effective, and quality delivery. Utilizing relevant software tools to prepare drawings that convey materials, technical specifications, dimensions, and construction requirements. Preparing architectural drawings including plans, sections, elevations, site layouts, and detailed working drawings using AutoCAD, REVIT, or equivalent software. Producing structural drawings based on inputs from relevant professionals. Preparing drawings for disciplines including sanitary, electrical, and mechanical based on information provided. Ensuring drawings are prepared in accordance with given instructions, schematic designs, and technical specifications. Assisting in the preparation of as-built drawings and project documentation.
Design Review and Revision: Supporting the revision and updating of design drawings for new and existing buildings and infrastructure projects. Translating technical instructions, sketches, and mark-ups into accurate drawing outputs. Revising drawings and details throughout the design and construction phases as required.
Site Coordination and Technical Support: Participating in technical coordination meetings and attending site visits as required. Supporting site assessments by preparing sketches, layouts, and drawings reflecting site conditions. Assisting in identifying drafting-related issues and proposing practical solutions.
Documentation and Knowledge Management: Maintaining organized records of drawings, revisions, and project documentation. Supporting the preparation of as-built documentation and final drawing packages. Engaging in knowledge sharing and continuous professional development.
General Duties: Performing other related duties as assigned by the Senior Project Manager or Infrastructure team.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a High School Diploma/Secondary School Diploma combined with seven (7) years of relevant experience in architectural and engineering design. A Technical/Professional Diploma is desired and may substitute for some of the years of experience required. A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field is an asset and may substitute for up to four (4) years of the required relevant work experience. Proficiency in AutoCAD is required, and experience with REVIT or equivalent software is also necessary. Candidates should have a strong understanding of architectural and engineering principles and practices, as well as experience in preparing high-quality design documentation.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a High School Diploma/Secondary School Diploma as a minimum requirement. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in AutoCAD and have experience working in multicultural environments or UN system organizations in a developing country, which is desired but not mandatory.
Languages: Fluency in English and Amharic is required for this position. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills in both languages, as they will be working in a diverse environment and may need to interact with various stakeholders and team members.

The position is classified at the Associate seniority level (ICS 07). The initial duration of the contract is one year, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and budget availability.
