Job Overview: The UN Intern - Public Information (UN Photo) position is designed for individuals who are passionate about photography and public information within the context of the United Nations. The intern will work closely with the UN Photo Unit, gaining hands-on experience in digital photography, archival processes, and social media engagement. The role involves contributing to the daily coverage of UN meetings, performing digital retouching of images, and assisting in the captioning of photographs. Interns will also receive training on using a Digital Asset Management (DAM) platform, specifically Orange Logic, to manage and archive photographs effectively. This internship provides a unique opportunity to learn about the UN's operations and enhance skills in public information and digital media.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
Assisting in the coverage of daily activities and events at the United Nations, capturing high-quality photographs.
Performing digital retouching on current and archival images to ensure they meet the UN's standards for publication.
Captioning photographs accurately to provide context and information about the events captured.
Uploading and archiving photographs on the DAM platform, ensuring that all relevant metadata is embedded for easy access and publication on the UN Photo website.
Supporting the management of the UN Photo Unit's social media accounts by creating engaging content and posts.
Collaborating with team members on various projects and tasks as assigned by the Chief of the Unit.
Participating in training sessions to enhance skills related to photography, digital media, and public information.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following qualifications: (a) Enrollment in or completion of a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or enrollment in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). (b) A field of study closely related to the internship is required. (c) Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. (d) Strong writing skills with the ability to draft news articles and social media posts. (e) Familiarity with designing surveys and polls is desirable. (f) A demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals. (g) Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or being in the final year of a bachelor's degree program. The field of study should be relevant to the internship, such as communications, media studies, international relations, or a related discipline. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the context and responsibilities of the role within the UN framework.
