Job Overview:
The position of Food Systems and Climate Specialist at WFP Guatemala is crucial for coordinating the design, articulation, and implementation of strategic initiatives related to climate resilience, sustainable food systems, adaptive social protection, and resource mobilization. The role requires specialized advisory skills to ensure technical and programmatic quality in alignment with national priorities, corporate policies, and donor requirements. The specialist will be responsible for formulating, managing, and monitoring proposals linked to climate financing mechanisms and development initiatives, working closely with government counterparts, UN agencies, development partners, and internal WFP teams. This position emphasizes the importance of integrating climate adaptation strategies into sustainable food systems, ensuring that initiatives contribute to WFP's strategic objectives in food security, nutrition, social protection, and livelihood resilience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Technical Leadership in Climate Financing: Coordinate the identification, formulation, review, and development of initiatives related to climate financing mechanisms, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and other relevant thematic funds. Develop and consolidate technical inputs required for project structuring, including theories of change, logical frameworks, context and climate risk analyses, feasibility studies, and monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Prepare technical documentation for review and validation processes by funding entities.
  • Strategic Coordination and Programmatic Management: Strategically coordinate with government institutions, key partners, UN agencies, and WFP teams at national, regional, and corporate levels. Facilitate consultation processes, technical validation, and consensus-building with national and community actors. Ensure technical and programmatic management of proposals and initiatives throughout their formulation and implementation stages, including planning, monitoring, reporting, and knowledge management.
  • Resilient Food Systems and Institutional Strengthening: Provide technical guidance on integrating climate adaptation approaches into sustainable and inclusive food systems. Develop technical inputs that link climate adaptation with WFP's strategic objectives, promoting the incorporation of nutrition, gender, youth, and sustainability across initiatives. Advise on capacity strengthening processes for government institutions and implementing partners in climate financing and programmatic management.
  • Knowledge Management and Accountability: Manage and systematize evidence, learnings, and technical knowledge derived from strategic initiatives related to climate resilience, food security, and resource mobilization. Ensure that programmatic decisions are informed by robust evidence and contribute to the quality of interventions.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of 9 years of progressive and relevant experience in development programs, resilience, social protection, food systems, food security and nutrition, and/or climate change adaptation and mitigation. Experience in project management and coordination, including planning, monitoring, reporting, and institutional support processes, is essential. Demonstrated experience working with partners, including government institutions, UN agencies, development partners, and NGOs, is required. Technical expertise in project formulation and development, particularly related to climate financing mechanisms, is also necessary. Knowledge of integrated approaches linking nutrition-sensitive social protection, climate resilience, gender, and food systems is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree or higher in Economics, Public Policy, International Development, Social Protection, Sustainable Food Systems, Program Management, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, or other related fields is required. Candidates with advanced degrees will be preferred.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience in development programs, resilience, social protection, food systems, food security and nutrition, and/or climate change adaptation and mitigation. Candidates should have experience in managing and coordinating projects, including planning, monitoring, reporting, and supporting institutional processes. Experience working with various stakeholders, including government institutions, UN agencies, development partners, and NGOs, is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Spanish (C level) is mandatory, as these are the working languages of the position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset.

The contract type is a Service Contract for a duration of 6 months, with the possibility of extension.
