The position is located within the Social Media Section of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC) of the United Nations. The DGC is responsible for promoting the work and priorities of the UN through various communication strategies, including social media. Job Overview:
The Public Information Officer will play a crucial role in implementing and managing the multilingual social media strategy of the Department. This position requires the incumbent to ensure that social media activities effectively promote priority issues and major events related to the UN's work. The officer will be responsible for daily monitoring and community management on UN global social platforms, particularly in French, and will engage with audiences to increase visibility and understanding of the Organization's initiatives. The role involves analyzing social media impact and trends, advising management on necessary actions, and developing strategies for campaigns aligned with global communications guidance. The officer will also produce social media assets, manage relationships with key constituencies, and represent the UN at inter-agency meetings and events. This position demands a proactive approach to communication and a deep understanding of social media dynamics in an international context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Implementing social media activities to promote priority issues and major events.
  • Monitoring and managing community engagement on UN global social platforms in French, including reporting on progress and taking follow-up actions.
  • Overseeing daily messaging and outreach to enhance the visibility of the UN's work.
  • Analyzing social media impact and trends to ensure an agile response to emerging issues.
  • Participating in the development and implementation of social media strategies for campaigns.
  • Producing or overseeing the production of social media assets, including research, audience targeting, and content creation.
  • Initiating and maintaining professional relationships with key stakeholders and external partners.
  • Acting as a focal point for social media issues, providing guidance to senior UN officials.
  • Participating in inter-agency meetings and events, representing the UN's interests. 1
  • Providing guidance and supervision to junior staff and interns as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential for effective campaign strategies. They should demonstrate the ability to analyze and integrate diverse information, identify public affairs issues, and manage global social media outreach professionally. The role requires a commitment to gender perspectives and ensuring equal participation in all areas of work. Candidates should exhibit professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to plan and organize tasks efficiently.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, or public administration is required. Candidates must have experience managing a professional social media presence in an international setting, particularly in French. Experience in implementing global social media campaigns and producing professional social media assets for French-language audiences is also required. Familiarity with analyzing social media insights and trends in an international context is desirable.

Languages:
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in both languages is required, with a minimum level of proficiency according to the UN Language Framework. Candidates must demonstrate strong reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in both English and French.
