Job Overview: The Fullstack Software Engineer position at CERN is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of the next generation of Virtual Research Environments (VRE). This role involves working within the ESCAPE Collaboration to enhance and operate various services such as the SWAN interactive notebook service, Rucio data management system, REANA reproducible-workflow engine, and Zenodo open repository. The engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring these services are production-ready and integrated into CERN's cloud infrastructure. The position requires collaboration with multiple teams to create a seamless, reproducible analysis environment that allows researchers to access data, run analyses, and publish results efficiently. The engineer will also engage with user communities to gather feedback and implement technical improvements, making this role vital for the success of CERN's analysis services.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Fullstack Software Engineer will be responsible for developing and maintaining Jupyter extensions for Rucio, REANA, and Zenodo, ensuring they are upgraded into production-ready plugins integrated with CERN's SWAN notebook service. The engineer will support the Competence Centre activities by organizing workshops, training events, and documentation, while also gathering user feedback to translate it into technical improvements. Additionally, the engineer will prototype the scaling of interactive analysis to distributed compute resources, streamline data staging between distributed data infrastructures and the analysis environment, and contribute to the integration of the VRE into the CERN EOSC node. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and collaboration with various teams to achieve the ultimate goal of a unified analysis platform.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have experience with Python and software development in a Linux environment. Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker and container orchestration with Kubernetes (including Helm) is essential. Knowledge of version control systems like Git and CI/CD practices is also required. Exposure to authentication and authorization technologies, such as OAuth2/OIDC, is beneficial. Experience contributing to or working with open-source software projects is a plus. The ability to write clear, maintainable code and a willingness to learn new technologies are critical for success in this role. Familiarity with scientific data management or workflow tools, as well as basic knowledge of web technologies and modern interfaces, is advantageous.
Educational Background: Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering or a related field. Candidates without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD are also not eligible. The educational background should be relevant to the responsibilities of the role, ensuring that candidates possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to contribute effectively to the team.
Experience: Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Software Engineering or a related field. This experience should ideally include work in software development, particularly in environments similar to those at CERN, such as cloud computing or high-performance computing (HPC) environments. The role is designed for recent graduates or those early in their careers, providing an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a leading research institution.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required for this position.
