Job Overview:
As a Data Storage R&D Engineer at CERN, you will be an integral part of the Storage and Data Management group, focusing on the development of data storage systems specifically for physics experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This role involves working with the CERN Tape Archive (CTA) team, which is responsible for the archival and management of an immense volume of data, approximately 1.5 Exabytes, generated from CERN's extensive experimental program. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting research and development, engaging in software development, and performing operational tasks to ensure the efficient management of data storage systems. You will analyze metadata and logs to optimize data placement on storage media, research mathematical models to enhance scheduling algorithms, and maintain software in C++/Linux environments. Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Data Storage R&D Engineer include:
  • Analyzing metadata and logs to optimize the physical placement of data on storage media, ensuring efficient data retrieval and management.
  • Researching and proposing mathematical models to improve the scheduling algorithms used by the CERN Tape Archive, adhering to specified cost constraints.
  • Developing and maintaining software applications in C++ and Linux, contributing to the overall functionality and performance of data storage systems.
  • Participating in operational tasks, troubleshooting issues, and providing support as part of a collaborative team environment.
  • Engaging in continuous learning and professional development to stay updated with the latest advancements in data storage technologies and methodologies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong technical and analytical skills, particularly in algorithms and optimization. A solid understanding of statistics, data modeling, and data visualization is essential. Experience in software development using C++ is required, along with familiarity with Linux operating systems and command-line tools. Knowledge of databases (SQL) is advantageous, and experience with version control systems (e.g., git) and container technologies (e.g., Kubernetes) is also beneficial. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Grafana and Prometheus is a plus, although training will be provided if necessary. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in mathematical modeling and optimization.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate will have a professional background in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience is required, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Candidates must also be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in software development, particularly in C++ and Python. Experience with data management and storage technologies is advantageous, although not mandatory. Familiarity with tape storage systems and robotic libraries is not expected, making this an excellent opportunity for candidates looking to expand their expertise in this area.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the working language at CERN. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time role with a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the position offers hybrid working flexibility. The target start date for this role is November 1, 202
  • The job may require stand-by duty and work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays, depending on the needs of the organization. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 6372 to 7004 Swiss Francs, tax-free, based on the candidate's degree.
