Job Overview:
The Mountain Biodiversity Specialist will play a crucial role in the 'Vanishing Treasures' project, focusing on global advocacy related to mountain biodiversity. This position involves working closely with international and national partners to provide technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policies. The consultant will be responsible for conceptualizing and designing thematic sessions on mountain biodiversity, particularly in relation to financing and advocacy efforts. The role requires a strong understanding of biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation, particularly in mountainous regions. The consultant will also be tasked with developing communication materials to elevate the importance of mountain ecosystems and their biodiversity on a global scale, ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Mountain Biodiversity Specialist include:

• Conceptualizing and designing thematic sessions on mountain biodiversity in collaboration with UNEP teams and partners, including the Mountain Partnership Secretariat and CBD Secretariat.
• Developing a detailed run-off show for the Mountain Biodiversity Day event.
• Co-organizing the Mountain Biodiversity Day event at the margins of CBD COP17, scheduled for October 26, 202
• Providing inputs for the Yerevan Dialogue related to mountain ecosystems and freshwater, including identifying partners and stakeholders and defining governance arrangements.
• Preparing background materials for high-level dialogues and national consultation meetings to review project progress and validate reports.
• Developing innovative communication products to raise awareness about project achievements.
• Drafting project proposals for upscaling solutions in the Hindu-Kush Himalayas.
• Organizing regional consultation meetings with stakeholders to review draft proposals and gather feedback.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in conservation biology, wildlife management, environmental science, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor's) with an additional two years of relevant work experience may be accepted. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management at the national or international level, preferably within the Asia-Pacific region. Experience in global advocacy and policy mainstreaming, particularly related to biodiversity, is essential. Familiarity with managing projects or events focused on biodiversity conservation or ecosystem restoration is desirable, as is experience working within the UN or other international development organizations with a strong environmental focus.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in fields such as conservation biology, wildlife management, environmental science, or a related discipline. A Bachelor's degree may be considered if accompanied by additional relevant work experience, demonstrating a strong foundation in the necessary academic and practical knowledge required for the role.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, particularly in the context of biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation. Experience working in the Asia-Pacific region is preferred, along with a proven track record in global advocacy and policy mainstreaming related to biodiversity. Familiarity with managing projects or events within the realm of biodiversity conservation or ecosystem restoration is highly desirable, as is experience in a UN or international development organization setting.

Languages:
Fluency in both oral and written English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.

Additional Notes:
The position is home-based and is expected to last for six months, with the consultant working approximately 10 days per month, totaling 60 days of work.
