The Fund Secretariat, located in Montreal, Canada, is administered by UNEP and plays a crucial role in facilitating the implementation of the Montreal Protocol's objectives.

Job Overview:
This internship is located within the UNEP/MLF at the Montreal duty station, where interns will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Programme Management Officer. The internship is designed to provide practical experience in the field of environmental policy and project management, particularly related to the Multilateral Fund's initiatives. Interns are expected to work five days a week, totaling 35-40 hours, and will engage in various tasks that contribute to the MLF's mission of supporting developing countries in their compliance with the Montreal Protocol. Interns will gain valuable insights into the workings of international environmental governance and the role of the United Nations in addressing global environmental issues. They will also have the opportunity to develop their research, analytical, and interpersonal skills while working in a multicultural environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for a range of duties that support the objectives of the Multilateral Fund Secretariat. Key responsibilities include:

• Assisting in the design of a tool for populating and regularly updating information on servicing sectors and non-investment related components from KIPs/HPMPs projects.
• Compiling and analyzing information from KIPs/HPMPs projects, focusing on various aspects such as refrigeration servicing sector activities, training programs, certification levels, local training institutes, and specific regulations and policies.
• Researching demonstration components included in HPMPs/KIPs, including information on sectors, application categories, sizes, alternatives, and energy efficiency gains.
• Analyzing regulatory frameworks related to controlled substances, equipment, and servicing practices, including licensing systems, bans, and monitoring practices.
• Investigating policies related to the market placement and control of RACHP equipment, focusing on allowed refrigerants and energy efficiency policies.
• Performing other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor, contributing to the overall objectives of the MLF and UNEP.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: - Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); - Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent); or - Have graduated with a university degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, Political Science, Public Policy, International Relations, Data Science, or a related field. While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is essential. Applicants should provide examples of how their academic background aligns with the internship's focus.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or graduation must be provided with the application. A strong academic background in relevant fields such as environmental science, policy analysis, or data science is preferred, as it will enhance the intern's ability to contribute effectively to the MLF's projects.

Experience:
No prior professional work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Program. However, candidates should demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge gained through their education, training, or coursework. Experience in conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing qualitative or quantitative data, and preparing research reports will be beneficial for the intern's success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French, the other working language, is also essential. Additionally, proficiency in any other official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse UN environment.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Canada may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship. It is crucial for successful candidates to discuss their specific visa requirements prior to accepting the internship offer. The internship is expected to last between 3 to 6 months, starting on January 4, 2027.
