Job Overview:
The Energy Director will lead the Africa Energy Program at WRI, which involves designing the program's overall strategy, overseeing its implementation, managing staff and associates, and ensuring the delivery of targeted outcomes. The role requires a strategic leader who can engage with various stakeholders, including policymakers, development finance institutions, and civil society organizations, to stimulate clean energy demand across key sectors such as agriculture and health. The Energy Director will also be responsible for donor engagement and fundraising efforts, ensuring that the program aligns with WRI's overarching objectives and contributes to the clean energy transition in Africa. This position is pivotal in shaping WRI's perspective on Africa's energy systems and influencing industry and policymakers through innovative research and analytical products.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Energy Director's responsibilities include leading the development of the Africa Energy program strategy, defining its long-term vision and priorities, and ensuring resources are directed towards high-impact opportunities. The Director will supervise and mentor a multidisciplinary team, oversee partnerships with government and private sector stakeholders, and develop a long-term fundraising strategy. Additionally, the Director will manage a diverse portfolio of initiatives funded by various donors, ensure alignment with organizational priorities, and monitor the performance of the Africa Energy team. The role also involves shaping research and thought leadership, authoring knowledge products, and representing WRI in media and events to communicate the organization's work and collaborate on strategy.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree in a related field, preferably in clean energy, international development, environmental policy, or environmental science. They should have a minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience in the energy field, with at least 10 years in program implementation and project management. Preferred qualifications include experience in energy markets, technology, and policy, as well as a proven track record of successful fundraising at a multimillion-dollar scale. Strong writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills are essential, along with experience in cross-cultural communication and engagement with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
An advanced degree in a relevant field is required, with a preference for candidates holding degrees in clean energy, international development, environmental policy, or environmental science. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of energy systems and the challenges faced in the African context.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 15 years of full-time relevant work experience in the energy sector, with a strong emphasis on program implementation and project management. Candidates should have at least 10 years of experience in these areas, demonstrating their ability to lead complex initiatives and manage diverse teams effectively. Experience in building partnerships and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, including governments and civil society, is highly valued.

Languages:
Proficiency in written and verbal English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, skills in the French language are highly desirable, as they can enhance communication and collaboration with stakeholders across the African continent.
