Job Overview:
The Public Health Officer position is integral to the Regional Director's Office (ORD) at WHO, focusing on enhancing public health systems in the African Region. The officer will provide technical support to member states, assisting in the development and implementation of national health strategies and policies. This role involves critical analysis of health data, capacity building, and community outreach to improve health service delivery. The officer will also engage with various stakeholders, including national counterparts and international partners, to harmonize public health strategies and secure funding for health initiatives. The overarching goal is to ensure that countries in the African Region can implement evidence-based policies that lead to improved health outcomes and universal access to quality health services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will perform a variety of duties, including:

• Providing specialist technical support to public health programs in assigned countries, ensuring effective implementation of national health systems.
• Contributing to the development of national health strategies and policies through technical advice and recommendations.
• Developing and monitoring work plans and budgets, including resource mobilization efforts.
• Analyzing health data and disseminating best practices for sustainable public health systems.
• Conducting capacity-building initiatives in public health management and financing.
• Serving as a technical resource for inquiries related to sustainable health systems.
• Coordinating community outreach activities to extend health-care networks.
• Liaising with national counterparts and international partners to harmonize public health recommendations.
• Seeking funding for new health projects and programs. 1

• Performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree in public health, global health, international health, or a related field. Essential qualifications include at least seven years of relevant experience in public health at national or international levels, particularly in monitoring and evaluating health programs. Desirable qualifications include experience within the United Nations system or other international organizations. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills, the ability to negotiate partnerships, and a commitment to health equity and social justice.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in public health or a related field is essential for this position. Candidates with additional qualifications in global health or international health are preferred. Educational qualifications must be obtained from accredited institutions recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in public health, particularly in the areas of monitoring and evaluation of health-related programs. Experience working in the United Nations system or other international organizations is highly desirable, as it provides valuable insights into the complexities of global health initiatives and partnerships.

Languages:
Expert knowledge of English is essential, with intermediate knowledge of French being desirable. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages will enhance collaboration with diverse stakeholders and facilitate the implementation of public health strategies across different regions.
