Job Overview:
The Oceans scientist" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Data Scientist position is a consultancy role aimed at enhancing the statistical and technical capabilities of national statistical offices and relevant government institutions in Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The consultant will play a crucial role in guiding and assisting experts from government agencies in Barbados and Belize to establish a statistical production system for the regular compilation of data related to seaborne trade and marine fishing. This includes the collection and analysis of statistics on imports and exports of goods transported by sea, as well as the environmental impact of these activities, specifically CO2 emissions. The consultant will work remotely and will be responsible for ensuring that the data collected is comprehensive, accurate, and aligned with the guidelines developed in previous phases of the project. The role requires a strong understanding of statistical methodologies and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders involved in the project.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant's primary duties and responsibilities include:

• Guiding and assisting country teams in Barbados and Belize in the setup of a statistical production system for the regular compilation of maritime trade data, including imports and exports of goods delivered by sea.
• Compiling and analyzing statistics on the value and volume of traded goods, transport work, average shipping time, transport costs, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions associated with maritime transport on an annual basis.
• Breaking down the collected data by various parameters such as trading partners, countries of transshipment, commodity groups, vessel types, and characteristics of traders and shippers.
• Assisting in the compilation of statistics related to marine fishing, including output, fleet size, and CO2 emissions, categorized by fish species, fishing methods, and vessel ownership.
• Participating remotely in meetings of national taskforces focused on GHG emission statistics for seaborne trade and marine fishing, providing insights and incorporating tools developed during the implementation phase into the Compilation Guidelines.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires the following qualifications:

• An advanced university degree (Master's) in statistics, data science, or a related field.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in processing and geo-spatial analysis of environmental data.
• Proven experience in processing and analyzing high-volume data related to international trade, vessel voyages, and emissions.
• Desirable experience in research related to the International Maritime Organization's GHG Strategy, evidenced by published research papers or reports.
• Experience in capacity building initiatives for developing countries, particularly in Small Island Developing States, is also desirable.
• Knowledge of environmental or energy systems is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's) in statistics, data science, or a closely related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of data analysis and statistical methodologies required for the role.

Experience:
The position requires at least 3 years of relevant experience in processing and geo-spatial analysis of environmental data. Candidates should have a strong background in handling high-volume data sets, particularly those related to international trade and maritime activities. Experience in research related to GHG emissions and capacity building for developing countries is highly valued.

Languages:
