Job Overview:
The Director of Space Operations will be a strategic leader responsible for overseeing the Directorate of Space Operations at ESA. This role is crucial for ensuring the delivery of world-class operational capabilities across ESA's various programs while driving innovation and technology development in space operations. The director will need to possess a strong strategic vision and the ability to foster coordination among various institutions and stakeholders. This position requires navigating a complex landscape of stakeholders to ensure that ESA's space operations align with the needs of its Member States and the priorities of the European Union. The director will play a pivotal role in positioning ESA and its industrial ecosystem at the forefront of space operations, both within Europe and on a global scale. The Directorate of Space Operations comprises around 600 staff and contractors across multiple sites in Europe, with an annual budget of approximately €400 million.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director will report directly to the Director General and will be a member of the ESA Executive Board, contributing to strategic leadership and decision-making across the agency. Key responsibilities include defining an ESA-wide strategy for space operations, ensuring alignment across various programs and stakeholders, and driving efficiency and innovation in operations. The director will oversee both a program component and a support component within ESA's matrix organization. The support component involves preparing and executing flight operations for ESA missions, while the program component includes activities related to space safety and operational services. The director will also act as Head of Establishment at ESOC, managing relations with administrative authorities and ensuring health, safety, and environmental provisions. Additionally, the director will focus on leadership, people management, and risk management, ensuring the well-being and career progression of the Directorate workforce.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong strategic acumen and the ability to define and drive a long-term vision for space operations. They should have extensive experience in space operations, with a proven track record of collaboration with international partners and agencies. More than 10 years of experience in senior management positions is required, preferably in an international context. Candidates should also demonstrate excellent relationship management and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence high-level decisions.

Educational Background:
Applicants should have at least a master’s degree, preferably in a technical or scientific domain. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of space operations and the technologies involved.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have significant experience in senior management roles, particularly in managing large teams and budgets. A minimum of 10 years in executive-level positions is expected, with a focus on space operations and international collaboration.

Languages:
The working languages of ESA are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory, while knowledge of another Member State language is considered an asset. This linguistic capability is crucial for effective communication within the agency and with its stakeholders.

The position is classified as a Director level appointment, and regular travel to other ESA sites is required.
