Job Overview:
The Engineering Assistant position is located within the Engineering and Facilities Management unit of the Mission Support Service at UNSMIL. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Chief Engineer and will be responsible for supervising junior staff in various trade areas such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and welding. The role requires the incumbent to ensure that all engineering systems are installed and maintained according to recognized standards and safety regulations. The Engineering Assistant will also be tasked with preparing technical reports, assessing work requirements, and ensuring compliance with environmental policies. This position is crucial for the effective execution of engineering tasks and the overall operational success of the mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Engineering Assistant will have a wide range of responsibilities, including supervising the work of junior staff in various trades, installing and maintaining engineering systems, preparing and reviewing technical reports, developing and interpreting technical work orders, maintaining inventory records, and assessing unusual occurrences or damages. The incumbent will also be responsible for advanced planning and organizing of work, preparing design and cost estimates, coordinating with engineering counterparts, providing training to junior assistants, and ensuring compliance with environmental and waste management policies. Additionally, the Engineering Assistant will monitor the quality of materials and equipment used in maintenance activities and perform other duties as required by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a Trade and Craft Certification in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, or a related trade. The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in construction, commissioning, or operations and maintenance within the specific trade areas. For candidates with a first-level university degree or higher, the minimum experience requirement is reduced to five years. Experience with AutoCAD for developing technical drawings, as well as experience in developing Schedule of Rates (SORs) and Scope of Works (SOW) for engineering goods and services, is desirable. Experience working in UN or international organizations in the engineering field is also preferred.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, candidates must have a Trade and Craft Certification in one of the relevant trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or welding. This certification is essential for ensuring that the incumbent has the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the technical tasks associated with the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the construction, commissioning, or operations and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure within the specific trade areas. This experience should demonstrate a solid understanding of the technical aspects of the job. For candidates who hold a first-level university degree or higher, the required experience is reduced to five years. The experience should ideally include work in international organizations or the UN, as well as familiarity with engineering practices and standards.

Languages:
For this position, proficiency in English and Arabic is required, as these are the working languages for this job opening. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their language skills according to the UN Language Framework, which outlines the minimum required levels for each language skill.
