Job Overview:
The Protection Assistant – Monitoring plays a crucial role in the implementation of protection monitoring activities in selected IDP/refugee sites and host communities in Debark, Ethiopia. Reporting to the Protection Team Leader and under the technical supervision of the Protection Specialist – Monitoring, the assistant is responsible for conducting regular visits to monitor protection conditions, collecting and encoding data, and identifying individuals at risk. The role also involves sharing information and reporting on emerging protection risks and trends. The assistant will provide direct assistance to individuals with specific needs and support the implementation of various protection activities carried out by DRC in the designated project locations. This position requires a proactive approach to identifying protection trends and needs through various methods, including Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions, while ensuring adherence to international standards and DRC guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Protection Assistant – Monitoring will be responsible for a range of duties, including but not limited to: conducting protection monitoring in assigned areas; contributing to the development and review of protection monitoring tools; identifying protection trends and needs through interviews and observations; utilizing data collection systems for data entry and analysis; identifying individuals at risk and providing referrals for specialized assistance; supporting the coordination and implementation of Individual Protection Assistance; monitoring beneficiaries’ access to services; collaborating with Community Based Protection Networks (CBPN) to raise awareness about protection risks; maintaining relationships with stakeholders to gather information on displacements; participating in community engagement activities; ensuring data collection aligns with protection principles; documenting activities for project verification; and participating in protection assessments and report writing.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of one year’s experience in an entry to mid-level position within the humanitarian sector, specifically in refugee or IDP protection. Experience in conducting protection monitoring or assessments using online data collection tools is essential. Strong data collection, analysis, and reporting skills are required, along with experience working with displaced or conflict-affected populations. Candidates should demonstrate strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Integrity and a strong work ethic are crucial, as is the ability to meet deadlines under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, is mandatory, and familiarity with data collection tools such as Kobo is desirable.

Educational Background:
A university degree or diploma in social sciences, law, social work, international development, or a related field from a recognized institution is required for this position. Relevant certifications or licenses that enhance the candidate's qualifications may also be beneficial.

Experience:
The position requires at least one year of relevant experience in a humanitarian response context, particularly in roles related to refugee or IDP protection. Candidates should have experience in protection monitoring or assessments, preferably with an international NGO, UN agency, or relevant local authority. Familiarity with data collection tools and methodologies is also important, as well as experience working with vulnerable populations affected by conflict or displacement.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory. Proficiency in Amharic and other local languages is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is for a duration of 10 months, classified as a National Contract under Band I2, which is a non-management designation. The duty station for this role is Debark, Ethiopia, with a start date of August 1, 202
