The intern will be integrated into the Communications and Knowledge Management Section (CKMS) under the Office of the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support (ODESPS). The primary focus of this internship is to support the Library and CKMS team in various tasks related to library, information, and knowledge management. The intern will play a vital role in enhancing the visibility of library resources among staff and clients, as well as promoting ESCAP's work to key stakeholders and the public. Daily responsibilities will vary based on the intern's background and the internship period, providing a unique opportunity for hands-on experience in a dynamic environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's duties will encompass a range of responsibilities aimed at supporting library operations and knowledge management initiatives. These may include: assisting in the library's digitization efforts; participating in information management, knowledge management, and digital asset management tasks; aiding in collection management activities such as shelving and weeding; providing reference and circulation services; cataloguing books, serials, and multimedia materials within the library's integrated library system (ILS) and institutional repository; designing and publishing promotional and training materials related to the library's e-resources, services, and ESCAP publications, including online brochures and streaming video presentations; and performing other related tasks as required. This diverse set of responsibilities will allow the intern to gain valuable experience in library science and information management.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or (c) have studied library science or information technology/management, which is desirable. While professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme, candidates must have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for. Proof of meeting these criteria must be provided with the application, and an official certificate will be required at a later stage.
Educational Background: Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent. This educational background is essential to ensure that the intern possesses the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills relevant to the internship role.
Experience: While prior professional work experience is not a prerequisite for this internship, candidates should have a strong academic background in a field related to library science, information management, or a similar discipline.
